baylisascaris procyonis neural larva migrans in an infant in new york city.neural larva migrans (nlm) with eosinophilic meningoencephalitis secondary to raccoon roundworm (baylisascaris procyonis) infection has been reported in rural and suburban areas of north america and europe with extant raccoon populations. most cases have occurred in infants less than two years of age exposed to areas of raccoon fecal contamination. here, we present a case of baylisascaris-induced nlm from the densely populated borough of brooklyn in new york city and alert urban pediatricians to ...025346856
baylisascaris procyonis-associated meningoencephalitis in a previously healthy adult, california, usa.after severe neurocognitive decline developed in an otherwise healthy 63-year-old man, brain magnetic resonance imaging showed eosinophilic meningoencephalitis and enhancing lesions. the patient tested positive for antibodies to baylisascaris spp. roundworms, was treated with albendazole and dexamethasone, and showed improvement after 3 months. baylisascariasis should be considered for all patients with eosinophilic meningitis.027434260
vertebrate host susceptibility to heartland virus.heartland virus (hrtv) is a recently described phlebovirus initially isolated in 2009 from 2 humans who had leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. serologic assessment of domestic and wild animal populations near the residence of 1 of these persons showed high exposure rates to raccoons, white-tailed deer, and horses. to our knowledge, no laboratory-based assessments of viremic potential of animals infected with hrtv have been performed. we experimentally inoculated several vertebrates (raccoons, goat ...027869591
rabies surveillance in the united states during 2013.during 2013, 53 reporting jurisdictions reported 5,865 rabid animals and 3 human rabies cases to the cdc, representing a 4.8% decrease from the 6,162 rabid animals and 1 human case reported in 2012. ninety-two percent of reported rabid animals were wildlife. relative contributions by the major animal groups were as follows: 1,898 raccoons (32.4%), 1,598 bats (27.2%), 1,447 skunks (24.7%), 344 foxes (5.9%), 247 cats (4.2%), 86 cattle (1.5%), and 89 dogs (1.5%). one human case was reported from ma ...025356711

neighbor recognition in two "solitary" carnivores: the raccoon (procyon lotor) and the red fox (vulpes fulva).male raccoons and red foxes were trapped alive and exposed to each other in captivity. animals of each species trapped close to one another demonstrated a higher frequency of initial dominance-subordinance relationships and lower frequencies of more intense aggressive interactions than did animals trapped at greater distances from each other. this suggests the existence of neighbor recognition and thus a rudimentary social structure within these free-living "solitary" species.197417799055

wildlife and environmental health: raccoons as indicators of zoonoses and pollutants in southeastern united states.inasmuch as terrestrial fauna are an integral part of our natural environment and are directly exposed to disease and pollutants, it follows that certain wild populations could serve to detect subtle alterations within ecosystems. a collection of studies on raccoons is presented to stimulate other researchers to develop the potential of our wildlife resources as monitors of environmental health. raccoons have been used as serologic sentinels for st louis encephalitis and venezuelan equine enceph ...1975170239
frequency of sarcocystis spp in detroit, metropolitan area, michigan.a survey of sarcocystis spp in feral animals and in domesticated animals slaughtered in detroit, mi, was undertaken during a 6-month period, april to september, 1973, using histologic and digestion diagnostic techniques. results indicated 75.3% of 789 sheep and 10.8% of 306 lambs were infected. infection in young and adult sheep was low in april (0% of 78 lambs and 6.7% of 62 adult sheep), but increased in july (24% of 90 lambs and 94.1% of 201 adult sheep). high frequency of sarcocystis in summ ...1975803806
further characterization of raccoonpox virus.a poxvirus isolated from the respiratory tract of raccoons in a forest and swamp area near aberdeen, maryland, was characterized by biological, serological, and biophysical methods. the virus was shown to be related to the vaccinia-variola subgroup by serological and biophysical methods, but measurably different from the other viruses of this group by biological methods. it causes flaccid paralysis in 1-day-old suckling mice and does not grow well on cam after two or three passages.1975813616
