regulation of the f plasmid tray promoter in escherichia coli by host and plasmid factors.f plasmid dna transfer (tra) gene expression in escherichia coli is regulated by chromosome- and f-encoded gene products. to study the relationship among these regulatory factors, we constructed low-copy plasmids containing a phi(tray'-'lacz)hyb gene that couples beta-galactosidase and lac permease synthesis to the f plasmid tray promoter. wild-type transformants maintained high levels of beta-galactosidase over a broad range of culture densities. primer extension analysis of tra mrna from f'lac ...19912002497
microbiological and immunological aspects of experimental periodontal disease in rats: a review article.animal models in which microbiological and immunological aspects of periodontal disease can be studied prospectively seem well warranted. the rat bears much resemblance to man with respect to periodontal anatomy, development and composition of dental plaque, histopathology of periodontal lesions, and basic immunobiology. furthermore, reproducible methods are available for assessment of periodontal disease in rats, and detectable periodontal destruction can be induced in a few weeks in these anim ...19912002433
isolation and purification of bacteriocin from prevotella intermedia (bacteroides intermedius).thirty-three out of 46 strains of prevotella intermedia (bacteroides intermedius) isolated from gingival deposits of patients with adult periodontitis possessed the ability to inhibit growth of p. intermedia strain atcc 25611, and 6 of the 33 showed strong inhibitory activity. thirteen isolates did not have the ability to inhibit the growth of p. intermedia strain atcc 25611. an inhibition factor from one of the isolates, p. intermedia th14 which had strong inhibition, was purified and character ...19911920011
in vitro killing of actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and capnocytophaga spp. by human neutrophil cathepsin g and elastase.the purpose of this study was to compare the killing of actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans with that of capnocytophaga spp. by purified cathepsin g and elastase in vitro. both were sensitive to killing by purified cathepsin g, but only the capnocytophaga spp. were killed by elastase. killing by cathepsin g exhibited logarithmic kinetics, was enhanced slightly by alkaline ph, and was enhanced greatly under hypotonic conditions. treatment of cathepsin g with diisopropyl fluorophosphate significa ...19911879926

use of synthetic oligonucleotide dna probes for the identification of different strains of fusobacterium nucleatum.the ability of three different oligonucleotide probes to identify different oral strains of fusobacterium nucleatum was tested. probes 119 and 214 were designed on the basis of known amino acid sequences from the n-terminal end of an outer membrane protein of f. nucleatum strain fev1. probe h 2.1, was a randomly cloned chromosomal dna fragment of 2.1 kbp. the specificities of the probes were examined by testing each of them against a panel of five other species of fusobacterium (six strains), or ...19911837056
[bacteriological study on juvenile periodontitis].the predominant cultivable microflora of 23 pockets in 15 juvenile periodontitis (jp) patients was studied for the first time in china using the current anaerobic methodology. samples were taken with sterile paper points and dispersed on a vortex mixer. then the diluted samples were plated on the non-selective blood agar plates and selective mgb medium which favors the growth of actinobacillus actimycetemcomitans (aa) and incubated in anaerobic chamber for 5 days. from each sample 15 or more iso ...19911676335
[polymorphonuclear leukocyte-mediated effects on human oral keratinocytes by periodontopathic bacterial extracts].in order to investigate the polymorphonuclear leukocyte-mediated oral keratinocyte injury, the author established a method to culture keratinocytes (scc9 and gingival keratinocytes) and subjected to the cell detachment assay by polymorphonuclear leukocytes and/or bacterial ultrasonic extracts from actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans y4, bacteroides forsythus omz 408, fusobacterium nucleatum atcc 10953, capnocytophaga sputigena 4 and eikenella corrodens 1073. the bacterial extracts alone caused ...19921607829
[pneumococcus-induced septicemia in normal and splenectomized rabbits].a new rabbit model to study the consequences of splenectomy in host resistance to induced pneumococcal septicaemia is presented. a simple, fast, non-invasive and complication-free technique of bacterial inoculation into the rabbit airways, using transcutaneous cannulation of the trachea, is also described. sixteen normal and 24 splenectomised animals were used. the optimal dose of pneumonococcus (serotype b, type iii) was found to be 1 x 10(7) organisms. the above dose of bacteria given transtra ...19921479858
serum antibody responses in human periodontitis to cellular components of capnocytophaga.serum levels of igm, igg and igg-antibody subclasses directed against cell envelopes, lipopolysaccharides and cytoplasmic fractions from capnocytophaga sputigena, c. gingivalis and c. ochracea were examined in age-, race- and sex-matched periodontally healthy (n = 25) subjects and subjects with adult periodontitis (n = 25). the envelopes and cytoplasmic fractions were obtained by ballistic disintegration of the cells and ultracentrifugation. cell envelopes were treated with dnase, rnase and lyso ...19921417521
human neutrophil azurocidin synergizes with leukocyte elastase and cathepsin g in the killing of capnocytophaga sputigena.azurocidin was purified in the presence of phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride. electrophoresis revealed at least seven species which exhibited n-terminal sequences consistent with azurocidin. azurocidin exhibited no bactericidal activity against capnocytophaga sputigena or other oral bacteria but synergized the bactericidal activity of enzymatically active elastase. azurocidin also interacted synergistically with cathepsin g.19921399008
myocardial protection by retrograde cardioplegic perfusion in the presence of acute coronary artery obstruction. an experimental study.to investigate retrograde delivery of cardioplegic solutions as a means of enhancing myocardial protection in the presence of coronary artery occlusion, a two-part experimental model was devised. in part 1 (in vitro) the possibility of retroperfusing the entire myocardium during acute occlusion of the left anterior descending artery (lad) was assessed. in part 2 (in vivo) acute lad occlusion was performed in dogs, and during 2 hours of aortic cross-clamping crystalline cardioplegic solution was ...19921287835

effect of repeated bloodletting on the incidence of 2,7-faa-induced rat leukemia.the oral administration of n,n'-2,7-fuorenylenebisacetamide (2,7-faa) induced leukemia, especially mature granulocytic leukemia, in rats. 2,7-faa was administered to the rats of the wistar strain and a small amount of bloodletting was repeated for a long period. the incidence of leukemia and mature granulocytic leukemia became elevated by bloodletting. the induction of mature granulocytic leukemia might be increased by the promotion of granulopoiesis which had been suppressed by 2,7-faa.19761068628
[detection of hbsag and the related antibody (hbsab) with the radioimmunological method. behavior of the hbeag-hbcab system in hbsag-positive patients].a radioimmunological assay was made of hbsag and hbsab in 183 patients during the course of acute viral hepatitis, 23 with prior hbsag-positive hepatitis, 72 with chronic liver disease, 822 blood donors, 44 patients and 28 staff members from two dialysis centres, and the medical and paramedical staff of several high-risk departments. microimmunodiffusion on agar was also used to determine hbeag and hbeab in the same 183 acute hepatitis patients, 37 hbsag+ blood donors, 20 asymptomatic hbsag carr ...1980550751
[the truth of sigmund freud's psychoanalysis].the concept of truth in freud's metapsychology is a modern idea: a subject-related and pragmatic modification of the traditional concept of correspondence. but more important is the proof of a new implicit understanding of truth which becomes clearer in reation to the archaic conception of truth (alétheia) in the oedipus tragedy. freud finds in this drama not only the oedipus complex, but also the tragic process of disclosure represented in the tyrant's struggle to uncover the reality (being) be ...2005549314
ultrastructure of gliding bacteria: scanning electron microscopy of capnocytophaga sputigena, capnocytophaga gingivalis, and capnocytophaga ochracea.when examined by both light and scanning electron microscopy, capnocytophaga gingivalis, c. sputigena, and c. ochracea displayed three distinct growth zones: the original streak, an intermediate zone, and the advancing edge, or halo zone. on trypticase (bbl microbiology systems)-soy-blood agar, the cells translocated by gliding. c. gingivalis and c. sputigena formed large, irregular isolated colonies, while c. ochracea formed a more confluent cell mass. the cells within the streak zone and in mo ...1979528052
