xanthomatosis in geckos: five cases.five cases of xanthomatosis in geckos were evaluated, one in a northern green gecko (naultinus grayi) and the remaining four in three species of leaf-tailed geckos (two uroplatus henkeli, one u. sikorae, one u. fimbriatus). all geckos were females 3-11 yr of age, were clinically ill on presentation, and either died or were euthanized. necropsies showed emaciation in three geckos, with white nodular foci on coelomic surfaces in two of these geckos. the other two geckos had no gross abnormalities. ...199910572873
nutritional degenerative myopathy in a population of captive bred uroplatus phantasticus (satanic leaf-tailed geckoes).severe generalized degenerative myopathy was diagnosed in a population of captive bred satanic leaf-tailed geckoes (uroplatus phantasticus). the diagnosis was based on characteristic histological changes and response to dietary therapy. this is the first reported case of nutritional myopathy in the satanic leaf-tailed gecko.200515690956
isolation of a ranavirus from a gecko (uroplatus fimbriatus).a virus was isolated from the liver and stomach of a leaf-tailed gecko (uroplatus fimbriatus) with granulomatous lesions on the tongue and hepatitis. the virus was identified as an iridovirus on the basis of morphology by electron microscopy, restriction endonuclease assay, and sequencing of a large portion of the major capsid protein gene. comparative analysis revealed that this isolate is related to frog virus 3, the type species of the genus ranavirus.200517323572
a spectacular new leaf-tailed gecko (carphodactylidae: saltuarius) from the melville range, north-east australia.leaf-tailed geckos are a distinctive group of carphodactyline geckos of rainforests and rocky habitats of eastern australia. three genera are recognized: phyllurus (9 species), saltuarius (6 species) and orraya (1 species). leaf-tailed geckos have been the subject of much survey and taxonomic work because they are large, impressive geckos and generally have highly localized distributions. the six species comprising saltuarius are distributed in rock outcrops and rainforests along the ranges from ...201326176122
two new subspecies of the leaf-tailed gecko phyllurus ossa (lacertilia: carphodactylidae) from mid-eastern queensland, australia.following the discovery of a new population of phyllurus ossa on whitsunday island in the cumberland island group, eastern queensland, we conducted both genetic and morphological analyses to assess differences between all known populations. the analyses revealed three genetically distinct, morphologically diagnosable, geographical units. the differences are such that we recognise these as subspecies: phyllurus ossa ossa restricted to the mt ossa/mt pelion/ mt charlton/ st helens gap area; p. oss ...201326266318
a new leaf-tailed gecko of the uroplatus ebenaui group (squamata: gekkonidae) from madagascar's central eastern rainforests.we describe a new leaf-tailed gecko species of the uroplatus ebenaui group from the eastern central rainforests of madagascar, which had previously been considered as a confirmed candidate species. our description of uroplatus fiera sp. nov. relies on integrating evidence from molecular and morphological characters and is based on newly collected material from two localities. a phylogenetic analysis based on multiple mitochondrial dna fragments places the new species as sister to a lineage of un ...201526623762
complete genome sequence of a bohle iridovirus isolate from ornate burrowing frogs (limnodynastes ornatus) in australia.bohle iridovirus (biv) is a species within the genus ranavirus, family iridoviridae, first isolated from the ornate burrowing frog limnodynastes ornatus in australia. the biv genome confirms it is closely related to isolates from boreal toad anaxyrus boreas and leaf-tailed gecko uroplatus fimbriatus within the united states and germany, respectively.201627540051
two new species of coccidia (apicomplexa: eimeriidae) from leaf-tailed geckos, uroplatus spp. (sauria: gekkonidae) from madagascar, including a new host of eimeria brygooi upton & barnard, 1987.during may and june 2015, four common leaf-tailed geckos, uroplatus fimbriatus (schneider), five satanic leaf-tailed geckos, uroplatus phantasticus (boulenger), and four mossy leaf-tailed geckos, uroplatus sikorae boettger originally collected from madagascar and housed at the dallas zoo, usa, had their faeces examined for coccidian parasites. eight (62%) geckos were found to be passing oöcysts, including a new eimerian, a new isosporan and a previously described eimerian. three of four (75%) u. ...201627638735
two new species of leaf-tailed geckos (<i>uroplatus</i>) from the tsaratanana mountain massif in northern madagascar.the tsaratanana massif is the highest mountain massif of madagascar and is characterized by a high species-level endemism of its biota. here we describe two new small-sized species of leaf-tailed geckos of the uroplatus ebenaui group from this region. named in a preliminary way as confirmed candidate species uroplatus ebenaui [ca1] and [ca2] in previous studies, we here provide detailed data on their molecular and morphological differentiation and describe them as uroplatus fotsivava sp. nov. an ...201729245579
finaritra! a splendid new leaf-tailed gecko (uroplatus) species from marojejy national park in north-eastern madagascar.the marojejy massif in northern madagascar is a constant source of herpetological surprises. herein we describe a new species of leaf-mimicking leaf-tailed gecko, uroplatus finaritra sp. nov., based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence. this new species inhabits the rainforests of marojejy national park at low elevations and is morphologically similar to uroplatus phantasticus, but differs by having a larger body size, relatively shorter tail, and dark-red pigmentation of the ora ...201930790891
a new species of phyllurus leaf-tailed gecko (lacertilia: carphodactylidae) from the pinnacles, north-east australia.recent surveys of rocky rainforest in the townsville region have found additional populations of phyllurus geckos. one of these populations was discovered at the pinnacles, an isolated area of habitat in between the distributions of p. gulbaru and p. amnicola. genetic and morphological data shows that this population is most similar to p. gulbaru hoskin, couper schneider, 2003 but divergent in a number of traits. here we describe this population as a new species, p. pinnaclensis sp. nov., based ...201931715777
a new species of uroplatus (gekkonidae) from ankarana national park, madagascar, of remarkably high genetic divergence.previous studies on leaf-tailed geckos of the genus uroplatus identified a lineage from the ankarana karst massif in northern madagascar as genetically highly divergent, but only fragmentary information was available on these geckos. here, we provide an integrative analysis based on molecular and morphological data, including a newly collected specimen from this locality. phylogenetic analysis placed the ankarana lineage sister to u. ebenaui, but with a surprisingly high genetic divergence of ov ...201931715936
