heterogeneity within human-derived centers for disease control and prevention (cdc) coryneform group anf-1-like bacteria and description of corynebacterium auris sp. nov.recently, centers for disease control and prevention coryneform group anf-1 bacteria were described as corynebacterium afermentans, and group anf-1-like bacteria were described as turicella otitidis. over a 1.5-year period 10 strains of a previously undescribed, gram-positive, rod-shaped organism that was not partially acid fast and resembled anf-1-like bacteria were isolated from different pediatric patients with ear infections. these previously undescribed coryneform bacteria exhibited a disti ...19957547292
prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by corynebacterium afermentans subsp. lipophilum (cdc coryneform group anf-1).corynebacteria are important causes of endocarditis in individuals with valvular prostheses. we report the first published case of prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by the newly defined species corynebacterium afermentans subsp. lipophilum (former cdc coryneform group anf-1). the isolate was recovered from a perivalvular abscess specimen and 5 of 15 bactec blood cultures after 7 to 15 days of incubation. the isolation, identification, and susceptibility testing of corynebacterium species are ...19957751392
coryneform bacteria isolated from middle ear fluid.nineteen strains of facultatively anaerobic gram-positive rods isolated in pure culture from middle ear fluids were identified. all effusions were collected by tympanocentesis in children with acute otitis media. identification of microorganisms to the genus level was done by studying the cell wall composition. sixteen strains contain meso-diaminopimelic acid and arabinogalactan polymer but lack mycolic acids; therefore, these strains do not belong to a previously described taxon. because of sim ...19938315016
taxonomic study of corynebacterium group anf-1 strains: proposal of corynebacterium afermentans sp. nov. containing the subspecies c. afermentans subsp. afermentans subsp. nov. and c. afermentans subsp. lipophilum subsp. nov.we have determined the cell wall composition, guanine-plus-cytosine (g+c) contents of the dna, rrna gene restriction patterns, and the levels of dna-dna relatedness of 11 strains identified biochemically as centers for disease control (cdc) corynebacterium group absolute nonfermenter 1 (corynebacterium group anf-1). for seven of these strains, growth is abundant on 5% sheep blood agar, which differentiates them from the four other strains, whose growth requires a lipid supplement such as tween 8 ...19938494739
evaluation of the applicability of amplified rdna-restriction analysis (ardra) to identification of species of the genus corynebacterium.the 16s rrna genes (rdna) of 50 strains belonging to 26 different coryneform bacterial species and genomospecies and of the type strain of rhodococcus equi were enzymatically amplified. amplified rdna restriction analysis (ardra) with the enzymes alui, cfoi and rsai was carried out. the combination of the ardra patterns obtained after restriction with these three different enzymes enabled the differentiation between the following species: corynebacterium accolens (number of strains = 2), c. afer ...19958584787
corynebacterium afermentans subsp. lipophilum: multiple abscess formation in brain and liver.corynebacterium afermentans, a species recently identified, has previously been isolated from human blood cultures. we report the case of a previously healthy 39-year-old man who developed a brain abscess and a liver abscess due to corynebacterium afermentans subsp. lipophilum. the liver abscess penetrated through the diaphragm to cause pleural effusion and periostitis of the ribs. we believe this is the first reported case of disseminated infection with abscess formation due to this organism.19958685648
identification of turicella otitidis isolated from a patient with otorrhea associated with surgery: differentiation from corynebacterium afermentans and corynebacterium auris.turicella otitidis is a newly described coryneform bacterium isolated from middle ear fluids. we report here on the diagnosis of a strain isolated from otorrhea. the api coryne system (biomérieux, marcy i'etoile, france) used alone failed to differentiate t. otitidis, corynebacterium afermentans, and corynebacterium auris (anf group). biochemical tests such as dnase, enzymatic reactions (api zym; biomérieux), and carbon substrate assimilation tests (biotype 100; biomérieux) allow presumptive ide ...19968880538
species identities and antimicrobial susceptibilities of corynebacteria isolated from various clinical sources.over a 14-month period, 415 clinical isolates of coryneform gram-positive rods were recovered from various sources and identified to the species level according to recent identification schemes. corynebacterium urealyticum, corynebacterium striatum, corynebacterium amycolatum, and corynebacterium jeikeium predominated, accounting for 63% of all isolates. corynebacterium accolens, corynebacterium striatum, corynebacterium argentoratense, corynebacterium propinquum and corynebacterium pseudodiphth ...19968894575
corynebacterium mastitidis sp. nov., isolated from milk of sheep with subclinical mastitis.fourteen strains of a hitherto unknown catalase-positive, aerobic, gram-positive coryneformlike organism were isolated from the milk of sheep with subclinical mastitis from different regions of spain. the strains phenotypically closely resembled one another and biochemically were similar to corynebacterium urealyticum and corynebacterium afermentans subsp. lipophilum. the results of chemotaxonomic investigations were consistent with membership in the genus corynebacterium, and comparative 16s rr ...19979336910

prospective study of catalase-positive coryneform organisms in clinical specimens: identification, clinical relevance, and antibiotic susceptibility.during a 6-month period, all clinical isolates of catalase-positive coryneform organisms, which were isolated during the routine processing of clinical specimens, were characterized in the laboratory of the 1800-bed university hospital of leuven. the distribution of the species in the corynebacteria was: corynebacterium amycolatum 70 (53%), corynebacterium jeikeium 16 (12%), corynebacterium striatum 11 (8%), corynebacterium afermentans 10 (7%), corynebacterium minutissimum 9 (6%), cdc coryneform ...19989488824
growth differences of capnocytophaga canimorsus strains and some other fastidious organisms on various columbia-based blood agar media.three human isolates of capnocytophaga canimorsus from blood cultures showed no growth when cultivated on sheep blood agar plates based on bbl columbia agar base, whereas the same three strains grew excellently on sheep blood agar plates based on difco columbia agar bases no. 2 or eh. two of the three strains also grew well on blood agar plates based on biomérieux columbia agar. strains that grew better on either difco or biomérieux columbia based blood agar plates were found among eikenella cor ...19959810657
coryneform bacteria isolated from blood cultures and their antibiotic susceptibilities.we aimed to determine the types of corynebacteria isolated from the blood of patients at gaziantep university hospital, turkey, and their antibiotic susceptibilities. between february 1999 and june 2001, 3530 blood samples were cultured, of which 915 were found to be positive, and these were further investigated in the bacteriology laboratory. among positive blood cultures, coryneform bacteria were identified in 31 (3.4%) isolates. of these, 16 (51.6%) were corynebacterium jeikeium, six (19.4%) ...200212235925
corynebacterium afermentans lung abscess and empyema in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus infection.necrotizing pleuropulmonary infection in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome developed due to corynebacterium afermentans subspecies lipophilum. long-term combination antibiotic therapy was successful in eradicating the infection without surgery.200415108836
isolation of coryneform bacteria from blood cultures of patients at a university hospital in saudi arabia.coryneform bacteria have been increasingly recognized as opportunistic pathogens in recent years. the aim of this study is to identify and determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of coryneform bacteria isolated from blood cultures of patients seen at king khalid university hospital (kkuh), riyadh, kingdom of saudi arabia and review the literature.200415322601
species identification of corynebacteria by cellular fatty acid analysis.we evaluated the usefulness of cellular fatty acid analysis for the identification of corynebacteria. therefore, 219 well-characterized strains belonging to 21 corynebacterium species were analyzed with the sherlock system of midi (newark, de). most corynebacterium species have a qualitative different fatty acid profile. corynebacterium coyleae (subgroup 1), corynebacterium riegelii, corynebacterium simulans, and corynebacterium imitans differ only quantitatively. corynebacterium afermentans afe ...200616423489
in vitro activity of tigecycline and 10 other antimicrobials against clinical isolates of the genus corynebacterium.we studied the in vitro activity of tigecycline and 10 other commonly used antibiotics against 135 clinical isolates of non-diphtheria corynebacterium spp. using the etest system. tigecycline minimum inhibitory concentrations for 50% and 90% of the organisms (mic(50) and mic(90) values, respectively, in mg/l) were: corynebacterium urealyticum, 0.094 and 0.125; corynebacterium amycolatum, 0.125 and 2; corynebacterium jeikeium, 0.094 and 0.75; corynebacterium coyleae, 0.064 and 0.064; corynebacter ...200919153032
high frequency of macrolide resistance mechanisms in clinical isolates of corynebacterium species.the genus corynebacterium includes a high number of species that are usually isolated from human skin as saprophytes. however, these microorganisms have also been reported as infectious agents in a broad group of patients and have showed broad-spectrum resistance. we studied the susceptibility profiles against macrolides, clindamycin, and streptogramins of 254 clinical strains belonging to the species corynebacterium urealyticum (120), corynebacterium amycolatum (66), corynebacterium jeikeium (1 ...201020624090
