the in vitro production of anti-dna antibody by cultured peripheral blood or tonsillar lymphoid cells from normal donors and sle patients.anti-dna antibody responses by cultured circulating lymphocytes from sle patients and by the tonsillar lymphoid cells of normal donors were detected and enumerated by a sensitive specific elisa of culture supernatants, or by a hemolytic anti-dna pfc assay. although spontaneous igm and igg anti-dna and anti-ssdna responses were characteristic of sle lymphocytes and spontaneous igm anti-ssdna responses were characteristic of tonsillar lymphocytes, the circulating lymphocytes of normal controls nev ...20143905965
plasmid-mediated resistance to lincomycin by inactivation in staphylococcus haemolyticus.staphylococcus haemolyticus bm4610 was resistant to high levels of lincomycin and susceptible to macrolides, clindamycin, and streptogramins. this resistance phenotype, not previously reported for a human clinical isolate, was due to inactivation of the antibiotic. the gene conferring resistance to lincomycin in strain bm4610 was carried by a 2.5-kilobase plasmid, pip855, which was cloned in escherichia coli. plasmid pip855 caused inactivation of both lincomycin and clindamycin in s. haemolyticu ...19853907492
the sfia11 mutation prevents filamentation in a response to cell wall damage only in a reca+ genetic background.n-alpha-palmitoyl-l-lysyl-l-lysine dihydrochloride ethyl ester (pll) at sublethal doses causes filamentous growth of e. coli strains except sfia mutants, which divide normally in its presence. pll does not elicit the sos responses as judged by lambda prophage induction, an increase of reca protein synthesis or induction of the sfia operon in a sfia::lacz fusion strain. thus, it appears that filamentation caused by pll is not an sos function and might be the result of membrane damage by pll, whic ...19853911030
human pancreatic growth hormone (gh)-releasing hormone stimulates gh synthesis and release in infant rats. an in vivo study.administration of human pancreatic gh-releasing factor 1-40 (hpgrf-40) at doses of 1, 10, 20, 100, and 500 ng/100 g bw sc induced in 10-day-old rats a clear-cut rise in plasma gh 15-min post-injection, although the effect was not dose-related and peak gh levels were already present after the lowest grf dose. in 25-day-old rats, hpgrf induced only a slight rise in plasma gh at the dose of 500 ng/100 g bw sc, whereas it was completely ineffective at the lower doses. in 5-day-old rats, hpgrf (20 ng ...19853917905

synthesis of the novel dipeptide beta-aspartylglycine by aplysia ganglia.isolated ganglia from aplysia californica rapidly took up [14c]glycine or [14c]aspartate from a sea-water medium. approximately 20% of the tissue radioactivity was recovered in the peptides beta-aspartylglycine and glutathione after incubation with [14c]glycine. compared with other individual cells isolated from the abdominal ganglion, the glycine-containing white cells (r3-r14) incorporated less [14c]glycine into beta-aspartylglycine, but similar amounts into glutathione. in contrast, [14c]aspa ...20134031873
[fluorodensitometric determination of cytostatic acting michael-adducts of alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehydes in biologic material].alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehydes produce a selective cytostatic effect on tumor cells. by the formation of michael adducts with cysteine, toxicity can be greatly reduced without impairing cytostatic effectiveness. to further enhance the selectivity of the toxic effect, it is necessary to be able to follow the agent's kinetics in the animal body. among the analytic methods developed to this end, this paper represents the fluorescence derivatisation as a sensitive method for the determination of ...20144039578
a new multidimensional measure of children's perceptions of control.perceived control plays a central role in many motivational and cognitive accounts of behavior. in this study, a new 48-item self-report instrument, the multidimensional measure of children's perceptions of control, is described. perceptions of control are defined as children's understanding of the locus of the sufficient cause for success and failure outcomes. 3 dimensions of third- through ninth-grade children's perceptions of control are independently assessed: internal, powerful others, and ...20144042743
interactions of nuclear proteins with dna, during sperm differentiation in the ram.ram spermatid nuclei and caput epididymal sperm nuclei were prepared and treated with dtt under conditions avoiding proteolysis. whole-mount preparations for the electron microscope were made in the presence or absence of the detergent joy. the chromatin of the less mature, non-round spermatid nuclei displayed a nucleosomal organization that gradually disappeared at the time the histones leave the nuclei (elongating spermatids). digestion with micrococcal nuclease suggests that polynucleosome ar ...19854042771

hyperbaric pressure of 51 atmospheres is without effect on the depression of oxygen uptake in kidney tissue culture produced by halothane.although anesthetized animals are awakened when subjected to increased pressure, compression does not result in antagonism of all phenomena associated with these drugs. it has recently been demonstrated that halothane's inhibition of respiration of isolated rat liver mitochondria is not reversed by hydraulic compression to 51 atmospheres. in order to determine whether this phenomenon can be extrapolated to the whole cell, we have investigated the effect of hydraulic compression of intact renal c ...19854046731
free radical species mediating the toxicity of ozone for cultured rat lung fibroblasts.we have reported a model system with which to study factors influencing the toxicity of o3 for cultured rat lung cells. this continuing investigation was to determine the relative contributions of free radical species to the toxicity of o3 as measured by 51cr release and the use of free radical scavengers. toxicity from modes of o3 exposure favoring stable free radicals (stationary cultures or added o3-exposed medium) was prevented by the h2o2 scavenger, catalase. toxicity produced by exposing c ...19854049433
maintaining quality of care while reducing charges in the icu. ten ways.we believed that the dilemma of controlling costs yet maintaining quality of care might be approached in 10 ways designed to improve efficiency of care: principles of management, elimination of standing orders, classification of patients, written guidelines, mandatory communication, no repetitive orders, single order for single test, removal of monitoring catheters, constant administrative attention, and feedback. we monitored quality of care using the therapeutic intervention scoring system (ti ...20144051601

interaction of ultraviolet laser light with the cornea.the effect of pulsed ultraviolet (uv) laser light on the cornea depends on wavelength (photon energy), irradiance (photon flux), and pulse firing rate. at the available excimer laser wavelengths of 193, 249, 308, and 351 nanometers, the authors have varied the irradiance per pulse (10 to 2000 mj/cm2) as well a pulse frequency (1, 10, 25 hz) and determined the thresholds for coagulation and ablation of the corneal stroma. the latter ablative action creates a groove resembling an incision and was ...19854055287
lipid composition of the nervous system of earthworms (lumbricus terrestris).as part of a systematic study of the evolution of the nervous system, the lipid composition of the ventral nerves of earthworms was examined. the nerve axons are wrapped in copious layers of loosely bound membrane, superficially resembling the myelin sheath of vertebrates. however, neither galactocerebroside nor sulfatide, both of which are considered to be markers for myelin, was present, and only traces of glucocerebroside, which is abundant in shrimp nerve, were detected. the lipids were rich ...20134056795
short-term, mixed-diet overfeeding in man: no evidence for "luxuskonsumption".after 13 days of weight maintenance diet (13,720 +/- 620 kj/day, 40% fat, 15% protein, and 45% carbohydrate), five young men (71.3 +/- 7.1 kg, 181 +/- 8 cm; means +/- sd) were overfed for 9 days at 1.6 times their maintenance requirements (i.e., +8,010 kj/day). twenty-four-hour energy expenditure (24-h ee) and basal metabolic rate (bmr) were measured on three occasions, once after 10 days on the weight-maintenance diet and after 2 and 9 days of overfeeding. physical activity was monitored throug ...19854061637
the suicide inactivation of ox liver short-chain acyl-coa dehydrogenase by propionyl-coa. formation of an fad adduct.propionyl-coa gave an unexpectedly low turnover (0.03 s-1) and high km (153 microm) as a substrate for ox liver short-chain acyl-coa dehydrogenase (scad). on addition of an excess of propionyl-coa to scad the flavin a448 decreased to about 30% of its original value and the peak at 368 nm was replaced by one at 335 nm. the decrease in a448 exhibited first-order kinetics and correlated with a first-order decrease in the enzyme's catalytic activity to 22% of the initial value. the flavin, released ...19854062874
pteridine formation during lectin-induced lymphocyte activation.after iodine oxidation, biopterin, 6-hydroxymethylpterin, and 6-formylpterin were identified in mouse spleen lymphocytes by means of reverse-phase hplc, crithidia assay, and oxidative degradation. concanavalin a activation induces a 30-fold increase in the pteridine amounts; biopterin as well as the sum of the carbinol and the aldehyde attain levels of 6-8 x 10(-12) mol/10(6) cells. the most rapid increase occurs during the first 24 hr. thus, pteridine accumulation precedes the period of lymphoc ...19854066775
