on the time-dependent diffusion of macromolecules through transient open junctions and their subendothelial spread. i. short-time model for cleft exit region.in this two-part study we shall quantitatively study, using time-dependent models, the hypothesis that transient open junctions associated with widely scattered endothelial cells undergoing mitosis are the structural equivalent for the large pore pathway via which macromolecules the size of albumin or larger cross the vascular endothelium. in an earlier steady-state model [am. j. physiol. 248, h945-960 (1985)], the authors demonstrated that such an open-junction pathway could quantitatively acco ...19883256708
antibody synthesis specific for nonoral antigens in inflamed gingiva.in vitro experimentation indicates that periodontitis-associated bacteria contain potent polyclonal b-cell activators (pba). we reasoned that if pba were operative in vivo, plasma cells specific for nonoral antigens should be present in the inflamed gingival tissues, which are characterized by a plasma cell infiltrate. to test this, rabbits with experimental periodontitis were immunized in the hind legs with the histochemically detectable antigen horseradish peroxidase (hrp) or glucose oxidase ( ...19883257940
c1q component of complement binds to fibrinogen and fibrin.the interaction of complement component c1q with fibrinogen and fibrin was studied by using a solid-phase direct binding assay. scatchard analysis of radioiodinated fibrinogen binding to c1q indicated at least two high-affinity binding constants (kd) calculated as 8.5 and 120 nm. in contrast, binding of radioiodinated fibrin to c1q showed only a single class of binding sites with a calculated kd of 600 nm. fibrinogen-c1q binding was shown to decrease as a function of increasing salt concentratio ...20113258162

dna binding by 1-nitropyrene and 1,6-dinitropyrene in vitro and in vivo: effects of nitroreductase induction.1-nitropyrene, the predominant nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon found in diesel exhaust, is a mutagen and tumorigen. 1,6-dinitropyrene is present in diesel exhaust in much smaller quantities than 1-nitropyrene, but is much more mutagenic and carcinogenic. in an attempt to understand this difference in biological potencies, we have compared the extent of dna binding by these two nitropyrenes in vivo. we have also determined the effect of 1-nitropyrene pretreatment upon the induction of nitror ...19883345577

smooth muscle tumours of the digestive tract: report of 160 cases.of 160 patients seen in the period 1951-84 with smooth muscle tumours of the digestive tract, 71 proved to have leiomyomas, 87 had leiomyosarcomas and 2 had leiomyoblastomas. tumour diameter was frequently greater in patients with leiomyosarcoma. the surgical mortality was 2.8 per cent after treatment of leiomyoma and 10.3 per cent after treatment of leiomyosarcoma. after resection of leiomyosarcoma the 2-year survival rate was 86 per cent and the 5-year survival rate was 43 per cent. the only h ...20123349313
regional blood flows by the microsphere method: reproducibility in portal hypertensive rats and influence of a portal vein catheter.to determine the reproducibility of splanchnic blood flow measurements by the microsphere method in rats with portal hypertension and the effects of laparotomy with portal vein cannulation, eight groups of 10 rats were studied. cardiac output and regional blood flows were measured twice, 10 min apart, in pentobarbital anesthetized or awake, sham-operated or portal vein-ligated rats, with or without portal cannulation. variability between the two successive measurements was not affected by portal ...19883353395

renal artery reconstruction: extended indications.renal artery reconstruction has traditionally been limited to cases of documented renal artery hypertension. we report our experience with renal artery reconstruction on 32 arteries in 23 patients over a three-year period. these procedures were done for renovascular hypertension in nine patients, for renal preservation in seven patients, and concomitantly with aortic reconstruction in seven patients. aortorenal bypass was the primary method of reconstruction, with thromboendarterectomy, primary ...20123358165
near-total gastric necrosis caused by acute gastric dilatation.gastric dilatation caused by psychogenic polyphagia or bulimia may, under extreme circumstances, progress to total gastric necrosis. we have described a patient in whom acute abdominal symptoms and signs developed while he was receiving psychiatric treatment. laparotomy showed massive gastric dilatation with near-total infarction. total gastrectomy with cervical esophagostomy, feeding and decompressing jejunostomies, and wide drainage of the gastric bed were done. after staged reconstruction, re ...20123358178

purification and characterization of a family of high molecular weight surface-array proteins from campylobacter fetus.a variety of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria possess crystalline surface layers, although little is known of their function. we previously have shown that the high molecular weight surface-array proteins of campylobacter fetus are important in both the pathogenicity and antigenicity of this organism. for biochemical and immunological characterization, we purified high molecular weight (100,000, 127,000, 149,000) surface-array proteins from three c. fetus strains using sequential gel fil ...19883360785
mittelmeier ceramic total hip arthroplasty. a retrospective study.ceramic, featuring low reactivity and excellent durability, is an excellent material for biologic implant. the authors studied the mittelmeier ceramic total hip prosthesis in 62 patients (69 hips), with an average follow-up period for the surviving cases of 37.6 months (sd = 9.04; range, 24-52 months). as a result of aseptic loosening, 19 cases (27%) were revised, with an average time to revision of 26.2 months (sd = 8.8; range, 14-38 months). proper femoral interference fit, measured as 90% of ...20123361325
