tagging frogs with passive integrated transponders causes disruption of the cutaneous bacterial community and proliferation of opportunistic fungi.symbiotic bacterial communities play a key role in protecting amphibians from infectious diseases including chytridiomycosis, caused by the pathogenic fungus batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. events that lead to the disruption of the bacterial community may have implications for the susceptibility of amphibians to such diseases. amphibians are often marked both in the wild and in captivity for a variety of reasons, and although existing literature indicates that marking techniques have few negativ ...201424878599
structural diversity of nuptial pads in phyllomedusinae (amphibia: anura: hylidae).we studied the morphological variation of the nuptial pads using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (sem) in 26 species of phyllomedusines (anura: hylidae), representing the five currently recognized genera. all phyllomedusines have single nuptial pads with dark colored epidermal projections (eps). spine-shaped eps occur in cruziohyla calcarifer, phrynomedusa appendiculata and in one species of phasmahyla. the other species have roundish eps. the density of the eps on the pad is v ...201222419239
prevalence of batrachochytrium dendrobatidis in agalychnis moreletii (hylidae) of el salvador and association with larval jaw sheath depigmentation.amphibian populations around the world have been declining at an alarming rate due to factors such as habitat destruction, pollution, and infectious diseases. between may and july 2008, we investigated a fungal pathogen in the critically endangered morelet's treefrog (agalychnis moreletii) at sites in el salvador. larvae were screened with a hand lens for indications of infection with batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (bd), a fungus that can cause lethal chytridiomycosis in amphibians. subsets of i ...201121719819
infrared reflectance in leaf-sitting neotropical frogs.two members of the glass-frog family centrolenidae (centrolenella fleischmanni, c. prosoblepon) and the hylid subfamily phyllomedusinae (agalychnis moreletii, pachymedusa dacnicolor) reflect near-infrared light (700 to 900 nanometers) when examined by infrared color photography. infrared reflectance may confer adaptive advantage to these arboreal frogs both in thermoregulation and infrared cryptic coloration.1977860137
