genome sequence of bellavista virus, a novel orthobunyavirus isolated from a pool of mosquitoes captured near iquitos, peru.a novel orthobunyavirus, bellavista virus, was isolated from culex (melanoconion) portesi mosquitoes in the bellavista neighborhood of iquitos, peru, in 2009. the assembled segment l, m, and s sequences of strain prd0552 are 6,950, 4,469, and 1,256 bases in length, respectively, comprising complete protein-coding sequences and partial terminal untranslated sequences.201627834712
identification and genomic analysis of a novel group c orthobunyavirus isolated from a mosquito captured near iquitos, peru.group c orthobunyaviruses are single-stranded rna viruses found in both south and north america. until very recently, and despite their status as important vector-borne human pathogens, no group c whole genome sequences containing all three segments were available in public databases. here we report a group c orthobunyavirus, named el huayo virus, isolated from a pool of culex portesi mosquitoes captured near iquitos, peru. although initial metagenomic analysis yielded only a handful of reads be ...201627074162
mosquitoes (diptera: culicidae) from the northwestern brazilian amazon: padauari river.the mosquito fauna (culicidae) from remote northern areas of the state of amazonas were sampled using centers for disease control and prevention, shannon, malaise, and suspended traps, together with net sweeping and immature collections. one hundred and seven collections were performed in five localities along the padauari river, state of amazonas, brazil, during june 2010. the 20,557 mosquitoes collected are distributed in 17 genera, representing 117 different species, of which four are new dis ...201627480098
diversity of mosquito vectors (diptera: culicidae) in caxiuanã, pará, brazil.this paper presents a study based on ecological parameters represented by diversity and richness indices applied in a community of mosquitoes (diptera: culicidae), at the national forest of caxiuanã, melgaço municipality, state of pará, in the brazilian amazon. a total of 25,433 specimens of culicids were collected in the study, from five field collection periods, over 10 months, between 2005 and 2006. specimens were collected in four heights of the forest (ground level, 8 m, 16 m, and 30 m-cano ...201222997514
Genome scale phylogeny of the Alphavirus genus suggests a marine origin. The genus Alphavirus comprises a diverse group of viruses, including some that cause severe disease. Using full-length sequences of all known alphaviruses, we produced a robust and comprehensive phylogeny of the Alphavirus genus, presenting a more complete evolutionary history of these viruses compared to previous studies based on partial sequences. Our phylogeny suggests the origin of the alphaviruses occurred in the southern oceans and spread equally through the Old and New World. Since lice a ...201122190718
isolation and phylogenetic analysis of mucambo virus (venezuelan equine encephalitis complex subtype iiia) in trinidad.in the 1950s and 1960s, alphaviruses in the venezuelan equine encephalitis (vee) antigenic complex were the most frequently isolated arboviruses in trinidad. since then, there has been very little research performed with these viruses. herein, we report on the isolation, sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses of mucambo virus (mucv; vee complex subtype iiia), including 6 recently isolated from culex (melanoconion) portesi mosquitoes and 11 previously isolated in trinidad and brazil. results show ...200919631956
susceptibility of peruvian mosquitoes to eastern equine encephalitis virus.mosquitoes were collected in the amazon basin, near iquitos, peru, and used in experimental studies to evaluate their susceptibility to strains of eastern equine encephalitis virus (eeev) that were isolated from mosquitoes captured within 20 km of iquitos. when fed on hamsters or chickens with a viremia of 4105 plaque-forming units (pfu) of eeev/ml, culex pedroi sirivanakarn and belkin, aedesfulvus (wiedemann), psorophora albigenu (peryassu), and psorophoraferox (von humboldt) were susceptible t ...200818714873
molecular epidemiology of group c viruses (bunyaviridae, orthobunyavirus) isolated in the americas.to date, no molecular studies on group c viruses (bunyaviridae, orthobunyavirus) have been published. we determined the complete small rna (srna) segment and partial medium rna segment nucleotide sequences for 13 group c members. the full-length srna sequences ranged from 915 to 926 nucleotides in length, and revealed similar organization in comparison with other orthobunyaviruses. based on the 705 nucleotides of the n gene, group c members were distributed into three major phylogenetic groups, ...200516051848
guamá-group virus activity in surinam.from october 1972 through december 1973 entomological surveys were carried out in both a savannah and coastal area in surinam. attempts were made to isolate arboviruses from the captured mosquitoes. the results have been published elsewhere (panday and digoutte, 1979). the present paper deals with the further typing of the obtained guamá-group viruses. preliminary typing was done by means of complement-fixation test. by performing the neutralization test in mice, the unknown guamá-group viruses ...19816116303
tonate and guama-group viruses isolated from mosquitoes in both a savannah and coastal area in surinam.isolation of arboviruses was attempted from october 1972 till the end of 1973 from mosquitoes caught in both a savannah forest near powaka and a coastal area near "fernandesweg" in surinam. two types of arbovirus were isolated: eleven strains of tonate and ten strains of guama-group. in the savannah area ten strains of tonate and five of guama-group were isolated, whereas in the coastal area the numbers were one and five, respectively. all strains in the savannah area were isolated from pools of ...197941349
arboviruses isolated from mosquitos and man in surinam.in the capital of surinam, and in parts of the coastal plain and the savannah belt 47 strains of arbovirus were isolated from mosquito pools and from sentinel mice. most of the strains (51%) were of the mucambo type. the other types were guama, bimiti, una, catu, restan, maru, and kwatta. culex portesi was found to be the principal vector of all but one (maru) types. other vectors found to be carriers of arboviruses were psorophora ferox, mansonia venezuelensis, and aëdes serratus. the highest p ...19753002
