tolumonas auensis gen. nov., sp. nov., a toluene-producing bacterium from anoxic sediments of a freshwater lake.a new toluene-producing bacterium, strain ta 4t (t = type strain), was isolated from anoxic sediments of a freshwater lake. the individual cells of this organism were nonmotile, gram-negative rods that were 0.9 to 1.2 by 2.5 to 3.2 microns. the optimum temperature and ph for growth were 22 degrees c and ph 7.2, respectively. the g+c content of the dna was 49 mol%. toluene was produced from phenylalanine, phenylpyruvate, phenyllactate, and phenylacetate, and phenol was produced from tyrosine. bot ...19968573493
functional diversity and electron donor dependence of microbial populations capable of u(vi) reduction in radionuclide-contaminated subsurface sediments.in order to elucidate the potential mechanisms of u(vi) reduction for the optimization of bioremediation strategies, the structure-function relationships of microbial communities were investigated in microcosms of subsurface materials cocontaminated with radionuclides and nitrate. a polyphasic approach was used to assess the functional diversity of microbial populations likely to catalyze electron flow under conditions proposed for in situ uranium bioremediation. the addition of ethanol and gluc ...200818378664
tolumonas osonensis sp. nov., isolated from anoxic freshwater sediment.a polyphasic taxonomic study was performed on a strain of an unknown gram-negative, nonmotile, saccharolytic, facultatively anaerobic bacterium, strain ocf 7(t), isolated from anoxic freshwater sediment. the strain grew optimally at 22 °c and ph 7.5, and was able to grow under strict anaerobic conditions. major fermentation products from glucose metabolism are formate, acetate, ethanol and lactate. comparative 16s rrna gene sequence analysis indicated that strain ocf 7(t) was phylogenetically re ...201021148672
analysis of the bacterial community within carrot wash water.vegetables are washed after harvest to remove unwanted organic and inorganic particles, but wash water contaminated with certain pathogenic microorganisms can potentially contaminate produce. in this study, the microbial diversity of wash water was analyzed in samples taken from a carrot-processing facility. a 16s rrna gene library with 427 clones was constructed and analyzed by amplified rdna restriction analysis. for taxonomic classification, the 16s rrna gene nucleotide sequences of 94 amplif ...201121542782
complete genome sequence of tolumonas auensis type strain (ta 4).tolumonas auensis fischer-romero et al. 1996 is currently the only validly named species of the genus tolumonas in the family aeromonadaceae. the strain is of interest because of its ability to produce toluene from phenylalanine and other phenyl precursors, as well as phenol from tyrosine. this is of interest because toluene is normally considered to be a tracer of anthropogenic pollution in lakes, but t. auensis represents a biogenic source of toluene. other than aeromonas hydrophila subsp. hyd ...201122180815
The effect of recycling flux on the performance and microbial community composition of a biofilm hydrolytic-aerobic recycling process treating anthraquinone reactive dyes.Synthetic dyes are extensively used and rarely degraded. Microbial decomposition is a cost-effective alternative to chemical and physical degradation processes. In this study, the decomposition of simulated anthraquinone reactive dye (Reactive Blue 19; RB19) at a concentration of 400-mg/L in wastewater by a biofilm hydrolytic-aerobic recycling system was investigated over a range of recycling fluxes. The 16S rDNA-based fingerprint technique was also used to investigate the microbial community co ...201122117173
