canine visceral leishmaniasis at wadi hamam, in israel.a preliminary survey of canine leishmaniasis was made in israel by serodiagnosis, using a direct and competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. three (4%) of the 75 dogs surveyed were seropositive. the infected dogs came from wadi hamam near tiberias in northern israel. parasites isolated from one dog by needle aspiration were identified as leishmania donovani sensu lato by their excreted factor.19883256986
cutaneous involvement in a rare case of adult visceral leishmaniasis acquired in israel.skin lesions are rare in visceral leishmaniasis, especially in mediterranean countries. we describe an unusual case of visceral leishmaniasis in a 41-year-old man that began with a skin lesion. the parasites isolated from both the skin lesion and the bone marrow were typed as leishmania donovani sensu stricto. this pathogen is not endemic in israel or neighboring countries; its contribution to adult visceral leishmaniasis in israel is summarized.200212099746
the paraphyletic composition of leishmania donovani zymodeme mon-37 revealed by multilocus microsatellite typing.multilocus microsatellite typing (mlmt) was employed to compare strains of leishmania donovani belonging to the mon-37 zymodeme (mon-37 strains) from cyprus and israel to mon-37 strains from the indian subcontinent, the middle east, china and east africa as well as strains of other zymodemes. the mlmt data were processed with a distance-based method for construction of phylogenetic trees, factorial correspondence analysis and a bayesian model-based clustering algorithm. all three approaches assi ...200919376262
successful therapeutic splenectomy in an hiv patient with relapsing visceral leishmaniasis.a 43-year-old hiv-positive ethiopian immigrant presented with persistent diarrhoea, hepatosplenomegaly and pancytopaenia. visceral leishmaniasis was diagnosed by multiple gastrointestinal tract biopsies. blood polymerase chain reaction (pcr) was positive for leishmania donovani. despite highly active antiretroviral therapy (haart) and multiple courses of antileishmanial treatments, including liposomal amphotericin and sodium stibogluconate, the patient had multiple relapses. cd4 counts remained ...201222581957
