efficacy of dapsone with pyrimethamine (maloprim) for malaria prophylaxis in maputo, mozambique.in a randomized controlled study of malaria prophylaxis, dapsone-pyrimethamine at a weekly dosage of dapsone 50-100 mg with pyrimethamine 6.25-12.5 mg or placebo was administered to 166 school children for 17 weeks. fortnightly parasitological controls revealed 28 infections in the placebo group and none in the dapsone-pyrimethamine group. it is concluded that weekly dapsone-pyrimethamine is effective for the prophylaxis of falciparum malaria in mozambique.19921505413
[malaria morbidity among the nonimmune foreigners in the city of maputo and the problem of chemoprophylaxis].in a colony with nonimmune foreigners in maputo city (mozambique people's republic) active detection and treatment of patients suffering from malaria has been carried out for 1.5 years. it was shown that even in a city with some hyper- and mesoendemic regions where less than 10% of colony members were treated with chemoprophylaxis, yearly morbidity among them did not surpass 20-30 cases per 1000 population. such index is considered to be admissible risk for health if adequate diagnosis and treat ...19902191202
[comparative study of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and amodiaquine + sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine for the treatment of malaria caused by chloroquine-resistant plasmodium falciparum in maputo, mozambique].to compare the efficacy and side-effects of two therapeutic regimens for chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria, a randomized study was carried out in 69 patients in maputo central hospital in 1986-1987. the two treatments were sulfadoxine 25 mg/kg + pyrimethamine 1.25 mg/kg as a single dose (s + p) and amodiaquine 10 + 10 + 5 mg/kg over three days with sulfadoxine + pyrimethamine on the third day (a + s + p). the cure rate was 25/29 (86%) with s + p and 27/30 (90%) with a + s + p. no serious ...19902286005
[cerebral malaria and maternal deaths--a study of 13,141 deliveries at the maputo central hospital, people's republic of mozambique].in the central hospital of maputo we registered 1986 6 maternal deaths during delivery caused by cerebral malaria. clinical and histopathological findings have been discussed. in endemic districts of malaria convulsions during delivery are hints to cerebral malaria. following postpartal infections cerebral malaria together with eclampsia has the second position in the reasons of maternal death.19883291492
evaluation of four therapeutic regimens for falciparum malaria in mozambique, 1986.a randomized study on the effect of the following four treatment regimens on plasmodium falciparum parasitaemia was carried out on 200 asymptomatic schoolchildren in maputo, mozambique: chloroquine (25 mg/kg body weight), amodiaquine (25 mg/kg), sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (25 mg/kg and 1.25 mg/kg), or amodiaquine (25 mg/kg) + sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (25 mg/kg and 1.25 mg/kg) administered on the third day of the study. the results of in vivo tests indicated that 94% of the infections were resist ...19883293827
the influence of maloprim chemoprophylaxis on cellular and humoral immune responses to plasmodium falciparum asexual blood stage antigens in schoolchildren living in a malaria endemic area of mozambique.we examined the impact of chemoprophylaxis on the cellular and humoral immune responses to polypeptides of the asexual plasmodium falciparum blood stage antigens, the glutamate rich protein glurp and pf155/resa, both of which in previous field studies have been identified as potentially protective antigens. the study was carried out in the escola primária de lingamo, a primary school in a suburban area of maputo, mozambique. a cohort of 392 schoolchildren (aged 7-12 years) was randomly allocated ...19947810383
hypoglycaemia in paediatric admissions in mozambique.we studied the incidence and clinical associations of hypoglycaemia in an acute medical paediatric service in maputo, mozambique. of 603 children, 43 (7.1%) were hypoglycaemic. 16 of these with plasmodium falciparum malaria had a shorter illness, and a higher incidence of convulsions and focal neurological signs than those with other diagnoses, but were less likely to die. hypoglycaemia also complicated protein energy malnutrition, pneumonia, encephalitis, intestinal parasite infection, and neph ...19947904007
materno-fetal transmission of pregnancy malaria: an immunoparasitological study on 202 parturients in maputo.a total of 202 delivering mothers and their newborns were studied with the intention to follow the materno-fetal transmission of malaria. malaria infection was encountered in 35 cases (17.3%) in which plasmodium falciparum predominated in peripheral blood while p. malariae predominated on the placental surface. in cord blood p. falciparum was encountered in 1.5% of the cases. there was slightly more maternal infection in rural (23%) than in suburban areas (19%). less malaria infection was encoun ...19938449440
the effect of permethrin-impregnated wall-curtains on malaria transmission and morbidity in the suburbs of maputo, mozambique.the effect of nylon-netting wall-curtains impregnated with 0.5 g permethrin/m2 upon the biting rate of malaria vectors (anopheles gambiae s.l. and an. funestus) and on the plasmodium falciparum parasite rate, and morbidity due to malaria in children under five and between five and fourteen years was tested in the maputo area. the curtains significantly lowered biting rates of both vector species inside curtained houses, but reduced inside resting and outside biting only in an. funestus. the perc ...19958592765
the matola malaria project: a temporal and spatial study of malaria transmission and disease in a suburban area of maputo, mozambique.a temporal and spatial study of malaria transmission in a suburban area of maputo, mozambique with a mean population density of 2,737/km2 was made from december 1992 to june 1995. a steep but continuous gradient was observed in the plasmodium falciparum prevalence from 59.0% adjacent to the breeding sites to 5.4% only a few hundred meters distant. the entomologic inoculation rate ranged from a number too low to be determined in some districts to 20 infectious bites per person per year in the oth ...19979392594
preliminary survey of leptospirosis and lyme disease amongst febrile patients attending community hospital ambulatory care in maputo, mozambique.to evaluate the importance of the spirochetes leptospira interrogans s.l. and borrelia burgdorferi s.l., as causes of human diseases (leptospirosis and lyme borreliosis), in order to guide the development of laboratory services and patient management and to identify the appropriateness of future epidemiological studies.19979431763
malaria-related maternal mortality in urban mozambique.all pregnancy-related maternal deaths that occurred at the central hospital of maputo during the 5 years between 1989 and 1993 were reviewed. the 239 maternal deaths recorded represented a maternal mortality ratio of 320/100,000 live births. overall, 15.5% of the deaths were directly attributable to malaria, and 19.7% of the women who died were found to be parasitaemic (with plasmodium falciparum) prior to death. autopsies on 161 of the women who died showed histological evidence of malarial inf ...19989713540
anopheles arabiensis and an. funestus are equally important vectors of malaria in matola coastal suburb of maputo, southern mozambique.transmission characteristics of malaria were studied in matola, a coastal suburb of maputo, the capital city, in southern mozambique, from november 1994 to april 1996. the local climate alternates between cool dry season (may-october) and hot rainy season (november-april) with mean annual rainfall 650-850 mm. saltmarsh and freshwater pools provide mosquito breeding sites in matola. malaria prevalence reached approximately 60% among people living nearest to the main breeding sites of the vectors. ...200010872861
analysis of sulphadoxine/pyrimethamine resistance-conferring mutations of plasmodium falciparum from mozambique reveals the absence of the dihydrofolate reductase 164l mutant.plasmodium falciparum is the predominant human malaria species in mozambique and a lead cause of mortality among children and pregnant women nationwide. sulphadoxine/pyrimethamine (s/p) is used as first line antimalarial treatment as a partner drug in combination with artesunate.200717378942
[sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine resistance in maputo, mozambique: presence of mutations in the dhfr and dhps genes of plasmodium falciparum].the frequency and distribution of mutations in plasmodium falciparum, dihydrofolate reductase and dihydropteroate synthase genes were analyzed, using the polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism methodology, in infected blood samples from mozambican children living in maputo, before and seven days after treatment with sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine (s/p). the results showed the occurrence of point mutations in the genes studied and the presence of combinations of three a ...200717876469
five years of large-scale dhfr and dhps mutation surveillance following the phased implementation of artesunate plus sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine in maputo province, southern mozambique.accumulation of mutations in dihydrofolate reductase (dhfr) and dihydropteroate synthetase (dhps) is strongly associated with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (sp) treatment failure. routine surveillance for these resistance markers was conducted annually at 26 sentinel sites in maputo province, mozambique, before and after the phased deployment of artesunate plus sp (as-sp), with 15,758 children sampled between 2004 and 2008. mean asexual parasite prevalence, polymerase chain reaction (pcr) corrected, ...201020439956

Prevalence of Malaria among Patients Attending Public Health Facilities in Maputo City, Mozambique.Abstract. We conducted a health facility-based survey to estimate the prevalence of malaria among febrile patients at health facilities (HFs) in Maputo City. Patients answered a questionnaire on malaria risk factors and underwent malaria testing. A malaria case was defined as a positive result for malaria by microscopy in a patient with fever or history of fever in the previous 24 hours. Among 706 patients with complete information, 111 (15.7%) cases were identified: 105 were positive for Plasmo ...201122144434
