Coxiella burnetii, the Agent of Q Fever, in Domestic Sheep Flocks from Wyoming, United States.Abstract Coxiella burnetii, the agent of Q fever, is an intracellular bacterial pathogen. It has a nearly cosmopolitan distribution. We conducted a serological survey of domestic sheep herds for infections with C. burnetii in Wyoming following reports of abortion and open ewes. Based on the serologic evidence, there was no link between reproductive problems and exposure to C. burnetii. However, the overall prevalence of C. burnetii in WY sheep was 7%, which indicates that the agent is present ...201122022809
investigation of a bluetongue disease epizootic caused by bluetongue virus serotype 17 in sheep in wyoming.to characterize a 2007 bluetongue disease (bt) epizootic caused by bluetongue virus (btv) serotype 17 in sheep in the big horn basin of wyoming.201020946084
tularemia in range sheep: an overlooked syndrome?abortion and death caused by francisella tularensis were well recognized in range flocks of domestic sheep in idaho, montana, and wyoming in the first 6 decades of the 20th century. the current report describes 4 episodes of tularemia in 3 range flocks in wyoming and south dakota in 1997 and 2007 (1 flock was affected twice). flock owners reported that ticks were unusually numerous and commonly present on sheep during outbreaks. tularemia presented as late-term abortions (3 episodes) or listless ...200818599860
cryptosporidiosis outbreaks associated with recreational water use--five states, 2006.cryptosporidiosis is a gastrointestinal illness caused by parasitic protozoa of the genus cryptosporidium and can produce watery diarrhea lasting 1-3 weeks; one or two cases per 100,000 population are reported annually in the united states. fecal-oral transmission of cryptosporidium oocysts occurs through ingestion of contaminated drinking or recreational water, consumption of contaminated food, and contact with infected persons or animals (e.g., cattle or sheep). unlike bacterial pathogens, cry ...200717657205
the serologic prevalence of q fever (coxiella burnetii) complement-fixing antibodies in the peninsular bighorn sheep of southern california.q fever is a rare illness in the southern california desert. during the past 34 years only 6 patients have been diagnosed with the disease at the eisenhower medical center, a referral center for much of the desert and surrounding mountains. in all but 2 instances, q fever was identified in patients who have been in contact with imported domestic sheep who are brought to the desert to graze and lamb in the fall and winter. the sheep are sent back to idaho, wyoming, and montana in the spring. with ...200616896140
q fever in the southern california desert: epidemiology, clinical presentation and treatment.despite the absence of a natural reservoir for q fever in the desert of southern california, six cases have been identified during the past 32 years. during that period of time, two areas have been used by northern sheep ranchers from idaho and wyoming to import sheep to an area in the coachella valley through 1985. thereafter, because of housing development, the sheep area was moved to blythe along the colorado river. all but two of these patients probably acquired infection by coxiella burneti ...200616837704
brucellosis in captive rocky mountain bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis) caused by brucella abortus biovar 4.nine (four female, five male) captive adult rocky mountain bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis) contracted brucellosis caused by brucella abortus biovar 4 as a result of natural exposure to an aborted elk (cervus elaphus) fetus. clinical signs of infection were orchitis and epididymitis in males and lymphadenitis and placentitis with abortion in females. gross pathologic findings included enlargement of the testes or epididymides, or both, and yellow caseous abscesses and pyogranulomas of the same. b ...200415362833
comparison of three fecal steroid metabolites for pregnancy detection used with single sampling in bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis).we conpared three fecal steroid metabolite assays for their usefulness in detecting pregnalcy among free-ranging rocky mountain bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis canadensis) from bighorn canyon national recreation area, wyoming and montana (usa) and captive bighorn ewes at zoomontana in billings, montana. fecal samples were collected from 11 free-ranging, radio-collared bighorn ewes in late january-may 2001 and from 20 free-ranging, radio-collared ewes in late march to mid-may 2002. free-ranging ew ...200415362827
chronic wasting disease of cervids.chronic wasting disease (cwd) has recently emerged in north america as an important prion disease of captive and free-ranging cervids (species in the deer family). cwd is the only recognized transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (tse) affecting free-ranging species. three cervid species, mule deer (odocoileus hemionus), white-tailed deer (o. virginianus), and rocky mountain elk (cervus elaphus nelsoni), are the only known natural hosts of cwd. endemic cwd is well established in southern wyomin ...200415148993
prion gene sequence variation within diverse groups of u.s. sheep, beef cattle, and deer.prions are proteins that play a central role in transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in a variety of mammals. among the most notable prion disorders in ungulates are scrapie in sheep, bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle, and chronic wasting disease in deer. single nucleotide polymorphisms in the sheep prion gene ( prnp) have been correlated with susceptibility to natural scrapie in some populations. similar correlations have not been reported in cattle or deer; however, characterizat ...200314722726
active surveillance for scrapie by third eyelid biopsy and genetic susceptibility testing of flocks of sheep in wyoming.control of scrapie, an ovine transmissible spongiform encephalopathy or prion disorder, has been hampered by the lack of conventional antemortem diagnostic tests. currently, scrapie is diagnosed by postmortem examination of the brain and lymphoid tissues for prp(sc), the protein marker for this group of disorders. for live, asymptomatic sheep, diagnosis using tonsil or third-eyelid lymphoid tissue biopsy and prp(sc) assay has been described. to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of third-eyel ...200212204945
bluetongue disease and the molecular epidemiology of viruses from the western united states.prototype and field isolates of united states bluetongue viruses were evaluated for genetic heterogeneity by sequence analyses. prototype viruses btv 2, 10, 11, 13 and 17 from the united states, btv 10 vaccine virus, and field isolates of btv 10 and 17 from california were analyzed. gene segment 2 from btv 10 and 17 isolated in 1980-81 and 1990 was sequenced along with gene segment 9 from btv 10 isolates. the wisconsin package was used to analyze nucleotide sequences and to predict amino acid co ...19968800543

psoroptic scabies in rocky mountain bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis canadensis) from wyoming.thirteen rocky mountain bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis canadensis) with clinical signs of psoroptic scabies were captured in wyoming. signs included droopy ears, depilation on the head and neck, and exudate in the ears. mites were identified as either psoroptes cervinus or p. equi. two ewes with scabies at the time of original capture had no clinical signs of mite infection 1 and 2 yr later.19902250336
chlamydial-caused infectious keratoconjunctivitis in bighorn sheep of yellowstone national park.an epizootic of infectious keratoconjunctivitis occurred in bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis) in yellowstone national park during the winter of 1981-82. the causative organism was identified as chlamydia sp. mortality related to the epizootic was approximately 60% of an estimated 500 bighorn sheep in the northern range population. the infection probably affected all sex and age classes, but field surveys of live animals and mortality suggested that mature rams died disproportionately. limited fiel ...19921602566
further studies on trypanosomers in game animals in wyoming.blood samples were collected from captive and free-ranging elk (cervus canadensis), mule deer (odocoileus hemionus), white-tailed deer, (odocoileus virginianus), black-tailed deer (odocoileus hemionus columbianus), pronghorn (antilocapra americana), moose (alces alces), and bighorn sheep (ovis canadensis) for cultural evidence of trypanosoma sp. infection. eleven of 188 (12%) hunter-killed elk, 22 of 37 (59%) free-ranging elk, and 79 of 119 (66%) captive elk were culture positive in 1973-74. par ...1976933315
observations on epizootiology and distribution of elaeophora schneideri in montana ruminants.seventy-four moose, 111 elk, 20 mule deer, 8 white-tailed deer, 26 prong-horn antelope, 42 domestic sheep and 3 bighorn sheep from montana or northwestern wyoming were examined post-mortem for evidence of elaeophora schneideri infection in 1973-74. fifteen percent of the mule deer and four percent of the moose were positive for adult arterial worms. this constitutes the first report of e. schneideri in mule deer in montana. no gross signs of blindness or other neurologic disorder were evident in ...1975127848
