the distribution and abundance of parasitic infections in sheep grazing on irrigated or on non-irrigated pastures in north-eastern spain.the parasitic output in faeces was studied in five sheep farms of zaragoza area (spain) during three years. two of them utilized irrigated pastures. the latter were characterized by a high prevalence of dicrocoelium lanceolatum, fasciola hepatica and protostrongylids. flood-irrigation did not interfere with digestive-tract strongyles and did not favour moniezia sp. infection. the heterogeneity of the parasitic output was more intense on irrigated pastures.19854091485
potential virulence determinants of salmonella serovars from poultry and human sources in spain.a total of 173 salmonella strains of different serovars isolated during 1992 from poultry and human sources in zaragoza (ne spain) were investigated for potential virulence factors. parameters studied included production of aerobactin, enterobactin, colicin (including colicin v) and hemolysin, serum resistance against serum from man, sheep, cattle and chicken, binding of congo red and crystal violet, auto-agglutination and calcium dependency at 37 degrees c and double colony morphology. prelimin ...19979100337
[brucellosis as occupational disease: study of an outbreak of air-born transmission at a slaughter house].the onset of a large number of cases of brucellosis among employees at a slaughterhouse in zaragoza where sheep from livestock culling procedures were being slaughtered, led to an investigation being made for the purpose of shedding light on the cause of this outbreak.200111400426
prevalence and analysis of potential risk factors for cryptosporidium parvum infection in lambs in zaragoza (northeastern spain).an epidemiologic study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of and to identify factors associated with the risk of cryptosporidium infection in sheep in zaragoza (northeastern spain). faecal samples from 583 lambs aged from 1 day to 3 months and 205 ewes older than 1 year were collected at 89 farms in the two regions of the province of zaragoza with the highest sheep population (zaragoza and ejea de los caballeros). in every sheep farm, data of the factors potentially associated with th ...200211836029
species composition, distribution, and ecological preferences of the ticks of grazing sheep in north-central spain.the distribution and ecological preferences of tick (acari: ixodidae) parasites of grazing sheep in the region of aragón (north-central spain) were surveyed on flocks four times a year and mapped into a 5 x 5 km grid. nine tick species were found. these were species of the rhipicephalus sanguineus group (about 95% of them rhipicephalus turanicus pomerantsev, in 91% of cells of the grid), rhipicephalus bursa canestrini & fanzago (79% of cells), dermacentor marginatus (sulzer) (58% of cells), haem ...200415189237
kinetics of oestrus ovis infection and activity of adult flies.oestrus ovis is a common sheep parasite in the mediterranean region. this study was carried out in the ebro river valley near zaragoza (northeast spain) using tracer animals to describe the seasons when infestation is more likely. based on that information and an analysis of the evolution of the parasite within the host, we suggest the most appropriate time for treatment. adult instars appeared in may until november and there was a diapause beginning in october-november and as least until februa ...200617285852
cryptosporidium genotypes and subtypes in lambs and goat kids in spain.to provide information on the transmission dynamics of cryptosporidial infections in domestic small ruminants and the potential role of sheep and goats as a source for human cryptosporidiosis, cryptosporidium-positive isolates from 137 diarrheic lambs and 17 goat kids younger than 21 days of age were examined by using genotyping and subtyping techniques. fecal specimens were collected between 2004 and 2006 from 71 sheep and 7 goat farms distributed throughout aragón (northeastern spain). cryptos ...200818621872
echinococcus granulosus infection in spain.cystic echinococcosis (ce) caused by the cestode echinococcus granulosus is an endemic disease in spain. although specific control programmes initiated in the 1980s have led to marked reductions in ce infection rates in spain, the disease still remains an important human and animal health problem in many regions of the country. human incidence and livestock (including sheep, cattle, pigs and horses) prevalence data were gathered from national epidemiological surveillance information systems and ...200818331519
genomic characterization of a novel group a lamb rotavirus isolated in zaragoza, spain.an ovine rotavirus (ovr) strain, 762, was isolated from a 30-day-old lamb affected with severe gastroenteritis, in zaragoza, spain, and the vp4, vp7, vp6, nsp4, and nsp5/nsp6 genes were subsequently characterized molecularly. strain ovr762 was classified as a p[14] rotavirus, as the vp4 and vp8* trypsin-cleavage product of the vp4 protein revealed the highest amino acid (aa) identity (94% and 97%, respectively) with that of the p11[14] human rotavirus (hrv) strain pa169, isolated in italy. analy ...200818661221
aspects of quality related to the consumption and production of lamb meat. consumers versus producers.the purpose of this study was to identify and compare the different evaluations made by the agents at either end of the lamb meat chain, i.e. producers and consumers, in relation to the parameters that consumers use when purchasing lamb meat and the factors that affect the production of quality lamb meat. in addition, consumer segments that can be targeted for action by the different agents in the chain were examined. the study was carried out in aragón, a region in north east spain that is a pr ...201021167649
factors associated with the purchase of designation of origin lamb meat.as in other products, quality labels that designate the origin of lamb meat are increasingly used by consumers as a cue for inferring the quality of the meat. the aim of the present paper is to identify those factors that most affect the purchase of lamb with an origin quality label. for this purpose a total of 371 questionnaires were carried out in the region of aragón located in the north east of spain. this region produces 48.5% of the total amount of lamb meat with a spanish protected geogra ...201020374881
visna/maedi virus serology in sheep: survey, risk factors and implementation of a successful control programme in aragón (spain).a serological survey of visna/maedi virus (vmv) infection involving 274,048 sheep from 554 flocks was undertaken during 2002-2007 in aragón, north-east spain. one hundred and two of these flocks enrolled in a vmv control programme to reduce seroprevalence by selecting replacement lambs from seronegative dams and gradual culling of seropositive sheep. twenty-five flocks were also visited to collect flock management and housing data. all study flocks had seropositive animals and 52.8% of animals t ...201019747864
management and environmental factors related to benzimidazole resistance in sheep nematodes in northeast spain.a survey to determine the level of parasite resistance to benzimidazoles (bz) under field conditions was performed on 107 commercial sheep farms located in the aragon region of northeast spain. resistance was measured using the discriminant dose, a simplified form of the in vitro egg hatch assay (eha). taking into account the spatial structure of the data, a multivariate approach was applied to management and environmental variables as well as to their relationships with bz resistance levels com ...201121889265
