assessment of echinococcus granulosus polymorphism in qinghai province, people's republic of china.cystic echinococcosis (ce) is highly endemic in the chinese province of qinghai, located on the tibetan plateau. the echinococcus granulosus sheep strain has already been reported in this focus. to improve our understanding of the role the parasite plays in the high prevalence observed in humans, we assessed the genetic polymorphism of 55 e. granulosus samples (37 from humans) using three discriminative mitochondrial markers: coxi, nadi and atp6. we obtained a total of 13 distinct genotypes whic ...200818309521
hepatic hydatid cysts with superinfection in a non-endemic area in taiwan.hepatic hydatid cysts are extremely rare in taiwan. we report a case of complicated, multivesicular, hydatid cysts in the liver and a secondary infection with klebsiella pneumoniae. the cysts were detected in an early stage by ultrasonography and computed tomography and treated successfully with radical resection.200212479556
isolation and characterization of an enterococcus-like bacterium causing muscle necrosis and mortality in macrobrachium rosenbergii in taiwan.a gram-positive, ovoid, diplococoid bacterium tentatively identified as enterococcus-like was isolated from diseased macrobrachium rosenbergii in taiwanese aquaculture ponds. the diseased prawns displayed poor growth, anorexia, inactivity, opaque and whitish musculature, and mortality. in histological preparations, melanized hemocytic granulomas were seen in the connective tissue around hemal sinuses together with hemocytic aggregation in necrotic musculature. five isolates of diplococci were co ...19989828405
compound w, a 3,3'-diiodothyronine sulfate cross-reactive substance in serum from pregnant women--a potential marker for fetal thyroid function.compound w, a 3,3'-diiodothyronine sulfate (t2s) cross-reactive material in maternal serum, was found to be useful as a marker for fetal hypothyroidism. in the present report, we explored its biochemical properties and studied its concentrations in cord and in maternal serum obtained from various gestational periods and at term from different continents. mean w concentrations, expressed as nmol/l t2s-equivalent, in maternal serum during gestation showed a moderate increase at 20-26 wk (1.57 nmol ...200717314688

role of pollen allergy in taiwanese patients with allergic rhinitis.pollen allergy is believed to be less common in east asia, latin america, and tropical areas. the purpose of this study was to understand the role of pollen allergy in taiwan.201021195885
the clinical significance of the indirect haemagglutination test for amebiasis in taiwan. 19734522049
detection and species identification of cryptosporidium from taiwan feeding animals.in this study, 107 fecal specimens were collected from 40 sampling sites in taiwan livestock and avian farms to test for cryptosporidium spp. oocysts. ten of 107 samples analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed the presence of cryptosporidium spp., among which 6 samples were simultaneously confirmed by immunofluorescence assay and polymerase chain reaction. nucleic acid sequencing of the 18s rrna gene identified 3 clusters of cryptosporidium spp. three cryptosporidium parvum isolates ...200818372647
purification and functional motifs of the recombinant atpase of orf virus.our previous study showed that the recombinant atpase encoded by the a32l gene of orf virus displayed atp hydrolysis activity as predicted from its amino acids sequence. this viral atpase contains four known functional motifs (motifs i-iv) and a novel aydg motif; they are essential for atp hydrolysis reaction by binding atp and magnesium ions. the motifs i and ii correspond with the walker a and b motifs of the typical atpase, respectively. to examine the biochemical roles of these five conserve ...201121540113
dissemination of two methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus clones exhibiting negative staphylase reactions in intensive care units.from december 1997 to march 1998, 25 methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (mrsa) isolates exhibiting negative staphylase (oxoid ltd., basingstoke, england) reactions were identified from various clinical specimens from 13 patients in six intensive care units (icus) or in wards following a stay in an icu at the national taiwan university hospital. the characteristics of these isolates have not been previously noted in other mrsa isolates from this hospital. colonies of all these isolates w ...19999986803
subclinical bluetongue virus infection in domestic ruminants in taiwan.bluetongue is an arthropod-borne viral disease affecting domestic and wild ruminants. taiwan, with the tropic of cancer crossing through it, was considered free of bluetongue virus (btv) before 2001. the goals of this study are to identify the serotype and phylogeny of taiwan btv isolates and to understand the serological status and chronology of btv infection. analysis of the s10 gene segment revealed that taiwan btv isolates are closely related to chinese strains. seropositive results were fou ...201019900768
129i concentrations of mammalian thyroids in taiwan.the 129i and 129i/127i ratios in mammalian thyroids were determined by neutron activation analysis to estimate the 129i concentrations in the biosphere due to fallout accumulation during the past decades in this island. the average 129i/127i ratio in thyroids of grazing animals, bovine and ovine, is about 1 x 10(-9), three times higher than that of hogs. the 129i/127i ratio in twin water collected during the same period was found to be as high as 1.7 x 10(-8) and it is supposed to be the predomi ...19969043144
[urinary tract infections and microbiological characteristics of proteus penneri isolated in taiwan].proteus penneri has been reported to be involved in urinary tract infections and calculi formation. we analyzed 2,265 positive urine cultures from patients hospitalized in taipei veterans general hospital, taiwan and found that 47 patients (2.1%) were infected by p. penneri. most of the patients were male with age over sixty and had been treated with various kinds of antibiotics. most of the patient's urine were collected by catheter. they were alkaline (ph 8.0) and contained amorphous phosphate ...19873652782
Structural and biological characterization of mastoparans in the venom of Vespa species in Taiwan.Mastoparans, a family of small peptides, are isolated from the wasp venom. In this study, six mastoparans were identified in the venom of six Vespa species in Taiwan. The precursors of these mastoparans are composed of N-terminal signal sequence, prosequence, mature mastoparan, and appendix glycine at C-terminus. These mature mastoparans all have characteristic features of linear cationic peptides rich in hydrophobic and basic amino acids without disulfide bond. Therefore, these peptides could b ...201121884742
