salmonella isolations in abattoirs in greece.the prevalence of salmonellas in drain swabs from three abattoirs of athens was studied with the use of conventional methods of salmonella isolation as well as with a new procedure which involves secondary enrichment from the usual selenite broth or muller-kauffmann's tetrathionate broth in rappaport's medium slightly modified.in all groups studied the secondary enrichment in rappaport's medium led to an increase in the number of positive swabs, in the number of salmonella serotypes, and in the ...19704925084
[epizootiology of foot and mouth disease during a quarter century (1962-1988) in greece].greece has been considered as free from fmd since 1984. during the years 1962-1988 29 primary and 240 secondary (totally 269) outbreaks had appeared in greece. from these 187 were of type o, 60 of type a, 14 of type c, 6 of type sat 1 and 2 of type asia 1. from the 269 cases 81 appeared in attiki, 57 in evros (near the turkey) and 131 in the other provinces. with reference to animal species 197 were in cattle, 60 in pigs and 12 in sheep and goats. most of the 29 primary outbreaks appeared in jan ...19921575672
lead content of fresh milk samples from different sites in athens.milk and dairy products constitute a major food, especially for infants and children, and relatively low levels of toxic elements can contribute significantly to dietary intakes and be hazardous for public health. the purpose of this survey was to define the levels of lead in milk samples of different origin, to establish the presence or absence of contamination. the milks from different sites of the metropolitan area of athens contained negligible traces of lead and thus are safe for the public ...200111577936
detection of chromosomal and plasmid--encoded virulence determinants in yersinia enterocolitica and other yersinia spp. isolated from food animals in greece.the distribution of yersinia strains in animal reservoirs was examined in 835 food animals (pigs, chickens, sheep, cows) from different greek departments (attica, fthiotida, viotia and evia) over a one year period. the isolated strains were characterized with respect to the presence of chromosomal (yst) and plasmid-encoded virulence determinants (virf, yada) and their antimicrobial susceptibility was tested. in total, yersiniaspp. were obtained from 9.94% of the 835 food animals at slaughter tha ...200717825934
ENVIRONMENTAL RADIOACTIVITY MEASUREMENTS IN GREECE FOLLOWING THE FUKUSHIMA DAICHI NUCLEAR ACCIDENT.Since the double disaster of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that affected hundreds of thousands of people and seriously damaged the Fukushima Daichi power plant in Japan on 11 March 2011, traces of radioactive emissions from Fukushima have spread across the entire northern hemisphere. The radioactive isotope of iodine (131)I that was generated by the nuclear accident in Fukushima arrived in Greece on 24 March 2011. Radioactive iodine is present in the air either as gas or bound to part ...201122090415
Radioactive pollution in Athens, Greece due to the Fukushima nuclear accident. As a result of the nuclear accident in Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant, which started on March 11, 2011, radioactive pollutants were transferred by air masses to various regions of the Northern hemisphere, including Europe. Very low concentrations of (131)I, (137)Cs and (134)Cs in airborne particulate matter were measured in Athens, Greece during the period of March 24 to April 28, 2011. The maximum air concentration of (131)I was measured on April 6, 2011 and equaled 490 ± 35 µBq m(-3). The maxi ...201122197531
