studies on the livestock of southern darfur, sudan. iii. production traits in sheep.the results of an intensive 15 months' study of 10 flocks of indigenous sheep are recorded. lambing rates approach 1.5 lambs per ewe per year, but a death rate of 23 per cent and an offtake of 27 per cent, means that flock numbers are probably slightly declining. twins account for 14 per cent of all births but the death rate of twin lambs is almost twice that of single lambs up to 6 months of age. increased productivity is therefore more likely to be achieved by improving the survival and growth ...1976945625
studies on the livestock of southern darfur, sudan. iv. production traits in goats.the results of a 15 months' intensive study on seven flocks of indigenous goats in the southern darfur region of the sudan are discussed in this paper. birth rates in the region approached 2-1 kids per doe per year. a high total offtake of 28 per cent and a weighted average death rate of about 16-5 per cent were insufficient to offset this high birth rate and flock numbers are increased. mortality in kids was unrelated to number of births. weighted average rate of gain for all surviving kids was ...1976996936
studies on the livestock of southern darfur, sudan. vii. a comparison of productivity indices for goats and sheep.data analysed by hand for earlier papers in this series have now been analysed by a least-squares method. three production indices--liveweight of young weaned per breeding female, per kg of breeding female and per kg metabolic weight of female--are calculated. for different variables parity and type of birth had significant effects on one or more indices for goats while sex, parity and flock had significant effects for sheep. goats in general had greater indices than sheep and the transhumant sy ...19836683435
akabane virus: serological survey of antibodies in livestock in the sudan.an investigation was conducted to assess the prevalence of akabane virus antibodies in domestic ruminants from different ecological zones of sudan. neutralizing antibodies were demonstrated in sheep, goats and cattle sampled between 1979 and 1980 from el obeid, nyala, kassala, jonglei and sennar. the highest prevalence was in jonglei where 27% of six sheep, 36% of eleven goats and 47% of 90 cattle had antibodies to the virus. although antibodies were demonstrated in 8% of 79 dams and 15% of 70 d ...19969239934
