production of shiga-like toxin among escherichia coli strains and other bacteria isolated from diarrhea in são paulo, brazil.an elevated level of shiga-like toxin i (slt-i) production was found in 1 of 466 escherichia coli strains studied. among the 34 sonic lysates obtained from classical enteropathogenic e. coli, 5 produced slt-i. the aeromonas, citrobacter, edwardsiella, enterobacter, klebsiella, proteus, providencia, pseudomonas, salmonella, serratia, shigella, yersinia, and vibrio strains also studied were not slt producers, except for a shigella dysenteriae type 1 strain. although slt-i-producing e. coli strains ...19902199511

potentially pathogenic vibrios associated with mussels from a tropical region on the atlantic coast of brazil.mussels (perna perna) harvested on the coast of ubatuba, in three different stations in the state of são paulo, brazil, were examined for vibrio spp. over a 1 year period. the ranges of most probable number (mpn 100 g-1) were: vibrio alginolyticus (< 3-24,000), v. parahaemolyticus (< 3-24,000), v. fluvialis (< 3-1100), v. cholerae non-o1 (< 3-23), v. furnissii (< 3-30), v. mimicus (< 3-9) and v. vulnificus (< 3-3). the highest incidence was observed for v. alginolyticus (92-100%), followed by v. ...19947989253
incidence of non-01 vibrio cholerae and aeromonas spp. in fresh water in araraquara, brazil.the occurrence of aeromonas spp., vibrio cholerae, and plesiomonas shigelloides in fresh water from various sources in araraquara, state of são paulo, brazil was determined. samples from ten distinct irrigation systems used in vegetable cultivation, from five distinct streams, from two reservoirs, from one artificial lake, and from three distinct springs were analyzed. all isolates were serotyped and tested for hemolysin, cytotoxin, heat-stable (st) and heat-labile (lt) enterotoxins production; ...19989625786
application of toxicity identification evaluation to sediment in a highly contaminated water reservoir in southeastern brazil.rasgão reservoir, located close to the metropolitan region of são paulo, brazil, has been analyzed previously, and its sediment was found to be highly toxic, with high levels of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and a complete absence of benthic life. polychlorinated biphenyls also were present, as was mutagenic activity, detected with the salmonella/microsome assay. because of the extremely complex mixture of contaminants in these sediments, a toxicity identification evaluation was pe ...200616519322
pathogenic bacteria associated with oysters (crassostrea brasiliana) and estuarine water along the south coast of brazil.oysters and estuarine water samples were collected monthly, from june 1998 to march 1999, in the cananéia estuary, on the south coast of são paulo, brazil, and analyzed for bacterial hazards with and without depuration in filtered estuarine water. aeromonas spp., plesiomonas shigelloides, vibrio cholerae o1, vibrio parahaemolyticus, and vibrio vulnificus were counted in oyster samples using the most probable number (mpn) and their presence verified in the surrounding estuarine water samples. the ...200717613090
vibrios dominate as culturable nitrogen-fixing bacteria of the brazilian coral mussismilia hispida.taxonomic characterization was performed on the putative n(2)-fixing microbiota associated with the coral species mussismilia hispida, and with its sympatric species palythoa caribaeorum, p. variabilis, and zoanthus solanderi, off the coast of são sebastião (são paulo state, brazil). the 95 isolates belonged to the gammaproteobacteria according to the 16s rdna gene sequences. in order to identify the isolates unambiguously, pyrh gene sequencing was carried out. the majority of the isolates (n = ...200818678453
correlation between environmental factors and prevalence of vibrio parahaemolyticus in oysters harvested in the southern coastal area of sao paulo state, brazil.the presence of vibrio parahaemolyticus in 123 oyster samples collected from an estuary on the southern coast of sao paulo state, brazil, was investigated. of the 123 samples, 99.2% were positive with densities ranging from < 3 to 10(5) most probable number (mpn)/g. densities correlated significantly with water temperature (r = 0.48; p < 0.001) but not with salinity (r = -0.09; p = 0.34). the effect of harvest site on counts was not significant (p > 0.05). these data provide information for the ...201020023076
occurrence and distribution of vibrio parahaemolyticus in retail oysters in sao paulo state, brazil.vibrio parahaemolyticus is a potentially pathogenic bacterium that occurs naturally in estuarine environments worldwide, and is often associated with gastroenteritis in humans following consumption of raw bivalve mollusks, especially raw oysters. the occurrence of total and pathogenic v. parahaemolyticus in 74 samples of raw oysters collected in restaurants, supermarkets, groceries and beach huts in sao paulo state, was monitored between february 2006 and january 2007. enumeration of v. parahaem ...201021056785
Characterization of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from oysters and mussels in São Paulo, Brazil.Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a marine bacterium, responsible for gastroenteritis in humans. Most of the clinical isolates produce thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH) and TDH-related hemolysin (TRH) encoded by tdh and trh genes respectively. In this study, twenty-three V. parahaemolyticus, previously isolated from oysters and mussels were analyzed by PCR using specific primers for the 16S rRNA and virulence genes (tdh, trh and tlh) and for resistance to different classes of antibiotics and PFGE.
