the changing bacteriology of recurrent pyogenic cholangitis in hong kong.when the results of bile cultures of rpc patients, admitted to queen mary hospital in 1973-74 and 1979-80, were analysed together with data obtained from the publication of previous investigators, a change in the bacteriology of the disease was noted. the percentage of rpc patients was affected by e. coli was on the decline while, in contrast, a higher percentage of patients was affected by the other enterobacteriaceae (especially klebsiella spp. and proteus spp.) and the non-glucose fermenters. ...19853915512
surveillance of antibiotic resistance in south east asia.antibiotic resistance in gram-negative bacteria, particularly salmonella and shigella, requires surveillance worldwide. this study describes results of surveys in hong kong, bangkok and kuala lumpur. all strains were isolated in hospitals which have large community catchment areas in addition to specialised hospital units. the prevalence of resistant strains was high in all areas. gram-negative bacteria such as enterobacter associated with hospital infections were resistant to penicillins and ce ...19892504618
the laboratory diagnosis of rickettsial diseases in hong kong.indirect immunoperoxidase (ip) tests against antigens of rickettsia typhi, r. sibirica and r. tsutsugamushi were carried out on serum samples from 10 patients known to have high titres against one or more proteus ox antigens in the weil-felix (wf) test. the ip test confirmed rickettsial infection in nine of the 10 patients, giving unequivocal indications of the grouping of the infecting rickettsia species and, in one instance, showing a diagnostic igm titre in a specimen taken on day 3 of the pa ...19921404554
changing patterns of susceptibilities of blood, urinary and respiratory pathogens in hong kong.the incidence and antimicrobial susceptibility of organisms isolated from blood, urine and respiratory specimens at a teaching hospital in hong kong were studied retrospectively from 1986-1993. the incidence of gram-positive bacteraemia, particularly coagulase-negative staphylococci (cns), increased significantly from 33.6 to 47.3% (p < 0.001) while that of gram-negative bacteraemia fell from 60.0 to 47.0% (p < 0.001). among blood isolates, methicillin resistance of cns increased from 17.0 to 58 ...19958926380
what have we learnt from community-acquired infections in hong kong?this study was initiated throughout hong kong, to reveal the characteristics of community-acquired infections. all specimens collected by general practitioners from infected patients were followed prospectively, and those that were culture-positive were analysed. four thousand seven hundred and forty-one specimens were collected from 3977 patients by 89 doctors from july 2000 to october 2001. the most common specimens were throat swabs (33%), urine (26%) and sputa (16%). the average culture-posi ...200312654732
