susceptibility of haemophilus influenzae to antimicrobial agents used in canada. canadian study group.we evaluated the incidence of haemophilus influenzae resistance to selected antimicrobials used in canada. from 1985 to 1987, 2503 h. influenzae isolates obtained in 14 hospitals across canada were sent to the centre hospitalier de l'université laval (chul) for identification, serotyping, biotyping and testing for beta-lactamase production. susceptibility tests were done with the use of 12 antibiotics. of the strains 424 (16.9%) produced beta-lactamase; the proportion varied from 12.8%, in newfo ...19902224717
hib vaccine coverage in children attending day care/nursery school in east york.this survey assessed haemophilus influenzae b vaccine coverage and factors affecting compliance in children at increased risk. a telephone survey was conducted of a random sample of 75 children, aged 24-60 months, attending licensed day care/nursery schools in east york. 96% of the sample was surveyed; only 51% were vaccinated. older children were less likely to be immunized and there were more single-parent families among the non-vaccinated. the age, educational level and country of birth of th ...19902331655
analysis of haemophilus parasuis isolates from southern ontario swine by restriction endonuclease fingerprinting.to study the occurrence and distribution of various strains of haemophilus parasuis in southern ontario swine, organisms isolated from healthy swine, from specific pathogen-free and conventional herds, and from disease cases were examined using restriction endonuclease fingerprinting analysis. in most herds, several strains of h. parasuis could be detected although one or two strains usually predominated. individual animals were colonized by a single or limited number of strains. in several case ...19882844376
antibiotic susceptibility of blood and cerebrospinal fluid isolates of haemophilus influenzae.one hundred and sixty-nine blood and cerebrospinal fluid isolates of haemophilus influenzae, collected in the province of ontario from children and adults from 1976 to 1983, were tested for susceptibility to six conventional and eight newer antibacterial drugs. most active were ceftriaxone, ceftizoxime and cefotaxime (mic90 less than or equal to 0.02 mg/l); latamoxef (moxalactam), acrosoxacin and ceftazidime were close behind with mic90s in the 0.05-0.09 mg/l range. twenty-five strains (14.8%) w ...19853872296
epidemiology of haemophilus pleuropneumoniae infection in pigs: a survey of ontario pork producers, 1981.information about factors associated with the spread and the effect of pleuropneumonia was obtained from 418 pork producers in ontario, who returned a mailed questionnaire. the overall herd prevalence of pleuropneumonia was 23.2%. the prevalence among herds with feeder pigs only was 34.3% and 16% among sow herds. the chance of pleuropneumonia breaking out in a herd was increased with increased traffic of pigs into the herd. the source of supplementary stock had an important effect on the chance ...19836831302
antimicrobial use in feedlot calves: its association with culture rates and antimicrobial susceptibility.data were collected on anti-microbial usage and health problems, in beef feedlot calves. although the association between them was not significant, many feedlot owners did not use recommended dosages or duration of treatment and this may have led to a reduced recovery rate.injectable tetracyclines were the most frequent antimicrobial for primary treatment of sick calves; whereas chloramphenicol was selected most frequently when the primary treatment appeared to be ineffective. treatment with ant ...19836831306
occurrence of "haemophilus somnus" in bovine semen and in the prepuce of bulls and steers.haemophilus somnus was isolated from 40 of 79 unprocessed bovine semen samples, 14 of 23 preputial washings of bulls and three of eight preputial washings of steers. the results indicate nonvenereal colonization of the male urogenital tract. it is suggested that dissemination of h. somnus from the urogenital tract may be of significance in the epizootiology of h. somnus associated diseases.19827093816
porcine haemophilus pleuropneumonia epizootic in southwestern ontario: clinical, microbiological, pathological and some epidemiological findings.a fibrinous necrotizing pleuropneumonia with a predominant mononuclear cell infiltrate commenced january 1978. the pneumonia, caused by haemophilus pleuropneumoniae assumed epizootic proportions and affected mainly feeder pigs in the intensive pig rearing area of southwestern ontario. a few abortions occurred. winter storms, recent transportation and other potentially stressful situations were associated with herd outbreaks. broad spectrum antibiotics were usually effective in stopping deaths.19817272838
genomic fingerprinting of "haemophilus somnus" isolates by using a random-amplified polymorphic dna assay.the random-amplified polymorphic dna (rapd) assay was used to generate dna fingerprints for 16 isolates of "haemophilus somnus," and one isolate each of "haemophilus agni," "histophilus ovis," "actinobacillus seminis," pasteurella haemolytica, and escherichia coli. the rapd assay differentiated among "h. somnus" isolates, which shared similarity coefficients of 0.46 to 1.00 on the basis of pairwise comparisons of rapd markers produced with nine random decamer primers. three virulent encephalitic ...19938458944
mycobacterium xenopi infection in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection.mycobacterium xenopi is one of the most frequently isolated nontuberculous mycobacteria in ontario, canada. we reviewed the records of 28 human immunodeficiency virus (hiv)-infected patients from whom m. xenopi was isolated between 1982 and 1995. m. xenopi was recovered from respiratory specimens from 24 patients, most of whom had clinical and radiographic evidence of pulmonary disease. however, coexistent pulmonary infection due to other pathogens was found in 17 patients: pneumocystis carinii ...19979332511
the association of titers to haemophilus somnus, and other putative pathogens, with the occurrence of bovine respiratory disease and weight gain in feedlot calves.serum samples were obtained from 602 calves (from 19 groups in four feedlots: three in ontario, and one in alberta) upon arrival at the feedlot and 28 d later. of these calves, 202 developed bovine respiratory disease (brd) and 400 did not develop brd. based on high antibody titers noted upon arrival, we infer that most calves were exposed to haemophilus somnus prior to arrival at the feedlot. within a group, calves with high titers on arrival had a reduced risk of developing brd later. most cal ...19989798091
adult epiglottitis: the toronto hospital experience.this study was conducted to gain insight into the diagnosis, treatment, and outcome measures in adult patients presenting with acute epiglottitis.19989857318

the pediatric economic database evaluation (pede) project: establishing a database to study trends in pediatric economic evaluation.while standard methods for conducting economic evaluations have evolved, little attention has been paid to the conduct of these studies in special populations such as children.200314515110
volume matters: physician practice characteristics and immunization coverage among young children insured through a universal health plan.we studied the association between immunization coverage for a cohort of 2-year-old children covered by a universal health insurance plan and pediatric provider and other health services characteristics.200616510636
diseases and pathogens associated with mortality in ontario beef feedlots.this study determined the prevalence of diseases and pathogens associated with mortality or severe morbidity in 72 ontario beef feedlots in calves that died or were euthanized within 60 days after arrival. routine pathologic and microbiologic investigations, as well as immunohistochemical staining for detection of bovine viral diarrhea virus (bvdv) antigen, were performed on 99 calves that died or were euthanized within 60 days after arrival. major disease conditions identified included fibrinos ...200616566254
prevalence of actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, actinobacillus suis, haemophilus parasuis, pasteurella multocida, and streptococcus suis in representative ontario swine herds.tonsillar and nasal swabs were collected from weanling pigs in 50 representative ontario swine herds and tested for the presence of 5 important bacterial upper respiratory tract pathogens. all but 1 herd (2%) tested positive for streptococcus suis by polymerase chain reaction (pcr); 48% of herds were s. suis serovar 2, 1/2 positive. in all but 2 herds there was evidence of haemophilus parasuis infection. in contrast, toxigenic strains of pasteurella multocida were detected by a p. multocida--enz ...200818505187
invasive haemophilus influenzae disease caused by non-type b strains in northwestern ontario, canada, 2002-2008.a high incidence of invasive non-type b haemophilus influenzae disease was found in northwestern ontario, canada; h. influenzae type a was the most prevalent serotype (42%). clinical and demographic analyses indicate that aboriginal children aged <5 years and adults with predisposing medical conditions are the most affected by invasive h. influenzae disease in the post-h. influenzae vaccine era.200919761408
changing epidemiology of invasive haemophilus influenzae in ontario, canada: evidence for herd effects and strain replacement due to hib vaccination.the epidemiology of invasive haemophilus influenzae infections was evaluated in ontario between 1989 and 2007 to assess the impact of the introduction of the conjugate h. influenzae serotype b (hib) vaccine in the early 1990 s on hib and non-hib serotypes in both vaccinated and unvaccinated cohorts as well as the possibility of "strain replacement" with non-vaccine h. influenzae strains. data were collected by the provincial public health laboratories-toronto, ontario agency for health protectio ...201020398617
invasive disease caused by haemophilus influenzae type a in northern ontario first nations communities.seven epidemiologically unrelated cases of invasive haemophilus influenzae type a (hia) disease were identified in first nations communities of northwestern ontario, canada, in 2004-2008. in all cases, hia was isolated from blood. the clinical presentation in most of the cases was moderately severe and all patients responded to antibiotic therapy. laboratory analysis of hia isolates from northwestern ontario indicated striking similarities in their phenotypic and genotypic characteristics. the f ...201021148281
