leakey virus: a new hantavirus isolated from mus musculus in the united states.a hantavirus, designated leakey virus, was isolated from a mus musculus captured in real county, texas, u.s.a. in august 1986. virus-specific fluorescence was first detected 13 days after inoculation of vero-e6 cells with spleen tissue from the seropositive m. musculus. ultrastructurally, the new isolate resembled other hantaviruses. leakey virus induced a fatal meningoencephalitis in infant fischer rats, with viral antigen detectable in brain, lung, liver, kidney and spleen. serum dilution, pla ...19883143810
hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, renal insufficiency, and myositis associated with infection by bayou hantavirus.hantaviruses are etiologic agents of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, an acute illness characterized by acute renal insufficiency, proteinuria, and hemodynamic instability. recently, a new world form of hantavirus disease, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (hps), was recognized; in this form, pulmonary edema is prominent, but renal insufficiency is generally lacking. hps cases from the southeastern united states may be exceptional in that they have exhibited both pulmonary and renal manifestat ...19968879771

prevalence of antibodies to sin nombre virus in humans living in rural areas of southern new mexico and western texas. 200111226584
geographical distribution of rodent-associated hantaviruses in texas.the purpose of this study was to increase our knowledge of the geographic distribution and natural host range of hantaviruses in texas, southeastern new mexico, and mexico. blood samples from 3,225 wild rodents, representing 34 species, were tested for hantavirus antibody (igg), using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. hantavirus antibody was found in one or more rodents from each of 13 counties in texas, otero county in southeastern new mexico, and mexico state (central mexico). the 133 anti ...200111469186
hantavirus pulmonary syndrome--five states, 2006.hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (hps) is a rodentborne viral disease characterized by severe pulmonary illness and a case-fatality ratio of 30%-40%. sin nombre virus causes the majority of hps cases in the united states, and the deer mouse (peromyscus maniculatus) is its predominant reservoir. this report describes an increase in human cases of hps reported during january-march 2006 from arizona, new mexico, north dakota, texas, and washington state. the findings emphasize the need for renewed att ...200616760891
seasonal variation of north american form of gigantolaelaps mattogrossensis (acari: laelapidae) on marsh rice rat in southern coastal texas.the ectoparasites of a small mammal community within an intertidal zone in the upper gulf coast region of texas were studied to assess the seasonal variation in abundances of the mite gigantolaelaps mattogrossensis (fonseca) (acari: laelapidae) on the marsh rice rat, oryzomys palustris (harlan). further study into the ecology and dynamics of this parasite-host relationship was deemed to be necessary to expand the understanding of these potential participants in the ecology of bayou hantavirus, a ...200717294924
choclo virus infection in the syrian golden hamster.andes virus and choclo virus are agents of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. andes virus in hamsters almost always causes a disease that is pathologically indistinguishable from fatal hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. the purpose of this study was to assess the pathogenicity of choclo virus in hamsters. none of 18 hamsters infected with choclo virus exhibited any symptom of disease. no evidence of inflammation or edema was found in the lungs of the 10 animals killed on days 7, 9, 11, 13, and 16 post-i ...200818385367
hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in texas: 1993-2006.hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (hps) is a rare cardiopulmonary disease that was first described after a 1993 epidemic in the southwestern united states. this study reviewed all cases reported in texas to date.200919077779
shared ancestry between a newfound mole-borne hantavirus and hantaviruses harbored by cricetid rodents.discovery of genetically distinct hantaviruses in multiple species of shrews (order soricomorpha, family soricidae) and moles (family talpidae) contests the conventional view that rodents (order rodentia, family muridae and cricetidae) are the principal reservoir hosts and suggests that the evolutionary history of hantaviruses is far more complex than previously hypothesized. we now report on rockport virus (rkpv), a hantavirus identified in archival tissues of the eastern mole (scalopus aquatic ...201121632770
update on hantavirus in oklahoma: are we missing cases?hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (hps) was first recognized in 1993. through july 6, 2005, 396 cases have been reported in the us, including 50 from kansas, texas, and oklahoma. we report the second case of hps in oklahoma and present data from rodent testing to support the presence of hantaviruses across oklahoma. we examined oklahoma death certificates for 1999-2003 for possible unreported hps cases. the rate of death in young adults 15-49 years due to acute respiratory distress syndrome was 69% ...200717557601
a longitudinal study of bayou virus, hosts, and habitat.what is currently known about the ecology of north american hantaviruses has come largely from studies on sin nombre virus (snv). we conducted a longitudinal study of bayou virus (bayv), the second-leading agent of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the united states. antibodies to hantavirus were detected from oryzomys palustris (most commonly infected species), sigmodon hispidus, peromyscus leucopus, reithrodontomys fulvescens, and baiomys taylori. however, only o. palustris had viral rna in tis ...200516354810
hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.we present the first case of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in the dallas/fort worth area. the patient was a 50-year-old previously healthy white man, who had adult respiratory distress syndrome (ards) and hypotensive shock after 1 week of nonspecific "viral" symptoms. despite supportive care, the patient died within several hours of presentation. this case illustrates several of the classic hallmarks of hantavirus infection such as hemoconcentration, thrombocytopenia, ards, and shock.199910071675
bayou virus-associated hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in eastern texas: identification of the rice rat, oryzomys palustris, as reservoir host.we describe the third known case of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (hps) due to bayou virus, from jefferson county, texas. by using molecular epidemiologic methods, we show that rice rats (oryzomys palustris) are frequently infected with bayou virus and that viral rna sequences from hps patients are similar to those from nearby rice rats. bayou virus is associated with o. palustris; this rodent appears to be its predominant reservoir host.19989452404
cocirculation of multiple hantaviruses in texas, with characterization of the small (s) genome of a previously undescribed virus of cotton rats (sigmodon hispidus).an environmental and laboratory investigation was conducted after a fatal childhood case of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome occurred in deaf smith county, texas in may 1995. a trapping campaign was conducted to identify possible rodent carriers. six species of murid and heteromyid rodents were collected, and at least one hantavirus-seropositive specimen was found in each of the five murid species. tissues from a selection of 11 seropositive specimens were examined by the polymerase chain reaction ...19969025697

update: hantavirus disease--united states, 1993.since the recognition of acute hantavirus-associated respiratory disease in the united states in may 1993, laboratory evidence of acute hantavirus infection has been confirmed in 30 persons in the southwestern united states; 20 (67%) of these persons have died. of those 30 persons, 23 resided in the four-corners region (14 in new mexico, six in arizona, and three in colorado). previously reported cases outside the four-corners states occurred in a nevada resident and a texas resident, neither of ...19938336693
