an epornitic of duck plague on a wisconsin game farm.in april, 1973, an acute disease with a high rate of mortality appeared in a flock of 233 ducks and geese at a private game farm. most of the flock (220) were black ducks (anas rubripes) and mortality was restricted to them. in may, the remaining live birds were placed in isolation but mortality continued in black ducks and occurred in other species. the overall rate of mortality for black ducks was 93% and the case fatality rate was 97%. no hemorrhaging from either the bill or vent was observed ...1976176478
effect of waterfowl (anas platyrhynchos) on indicator bacteria populations in a recreational lake madison, wisconsin.a public swimming beach in madison, wis., experienced intermittent high fecal coliform counts during the late summer and early fall of 1978. public health officials closed the beach on a number of occasions. a public health survey identified a combination of waterfowl wastes and meteorological events as the explanation for the high bacteria counts. fecal coliform bacteria were deposited by mallard ducks and multiplied in the beach sands. the bacteria were subsequently transported into the lake a ...1979394683
influenza in canada geese.the role of wild avian species in the natural history of influenza is unknown. a serological study was carried out to ascertain the prevalence, distribution, and types of influenza antibody in several wild canada goose populations. geese were trapped and blood samples were obtained in each of 4 consecutive years, 1966-69. antibody to influenzavirus was found in 66 (4.7%) of the 1 401 canada geese tested by the haemagglutination inhibition (hi) test. antiribonucleoprotein antibody was found in 8 ...19724541003
organochlorine and metal residues in eggs of waterfowl nesting on islands in lake michigan off door county, wisconsin, 1977-78.one egg from each of 114 red-breasted merganser (mergus serrator) nests in 1977 and 92 nests in 1978 was collected and later analyzed for organochlorines, polybrominated biphenyls (pbbs), polychlorinated styrenes (pcss), and metals. one egg was also collected from each of the dabbling duck nests located. twenty-nine of these eggs were analyzed for organochlorines and metals in 1977; 10 eggs were analyzed in 1978. all merganser eggs contained dde, polychlorinated biphenyls (pcbs), and dieldrin; a ...19816796936
newcastle disease virus in waterfowl in wisconsin.newcastle disease virus was isolated from the cloaca of 1-5% of live-trapped waterfowl in wisconsin in the fall from 1978-1980. antibody to ndv was detected in 8% of the birds tested, with no apparent difference between sex and age classes. experimental infection resulted in persistence of virus shedding for months after exposure. lack of detectable antibody in some of the experimentally infected birds suggests that reported antibody prevalence may not be indicative of the true prevalence of the ...19827097879
residues of organochlorines in mallards and blue-winged teal collected in colombia and wisconsin, 1984-1989.we compared the seasonal concentrations of 12 organochlorine (oc) compounds in samples of breast muscle, associated skin, and subcutaneous fat of blue-winged teal (anas discors) collected in ciénaga grande de santa marta, colombia (1987-1988), and of mallards (anas platyrhynchos) and blue-winged teal collected in wisconsin (1984-1989). although these species have similar feeding habits and overlapping breeding distributions, their winter ranges differ markedly. most blue-winged teal winter in th ...19968781073
peracute sodium toxicity in free-ranging black-bellied whistling duck ducklings.from 23 to 25 july 2002, 98-103 newly hatched black-bellied whistling ducks (dendrocygna autumnalis) were observed alive at an inland saline lake (la sal vieja) in willacy county, texas (usa). seventy-one (71%) died after showing signs indicative of sodium toxicity within 5 hr of entering the water; some died within minutes. six carcasses were sent to the united states geological survey, national wildlife health center (madison, wisconsin, usa) for analysis, and brain sodium levels of all duckli ...200415465728
blood values of the canvasback duck by age, sex and season.blood samples were obtained from canvasback ducklings from manitoba and saskatchewan and from immature and adult canvasbacks on the mississippi river near lacrosse, wisconsin and the chesapeake bay. these samples were used to determine baseline data on red cell counts, hematocrit, total protein, glucose, cholesterol, hemaglobin and distribution of plasma proteins. calculations were also made to determine mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concent ...197616498873
