hepatitis b and workers in institutions for the mentally retarded: risk of infection for staff in patient care.in the fall of 1982, we conducted a serosurvey of 920 of 933 employees in a large residential institution for the mentally retarded in salem, oregon. this survey demonstrated an overall prevalence of 10% for antibody to hepatitis b core antigen (anti-hbc), a marker of present or previous hepatitis b virus infection. antibody positivity was significantly associated with a history of ever having worked in a position involving direct patient care (adjusted odds ratio = 3.1, 95% confidence interval ...19892787161
impact of the 1999 aap/usphs joint statement on thimerosal in vaccines on infant hepatitis b vaccination practices.on july 8,1999, the american academy of pediatrics (aap) and the u.s. public health service (phs) jointly recommended reducing infant exposure to thimerosal, a commonly used vaccine preservative that contains mercury. specific recommendations were made to postpone the first hepatitis b vaccine dose until 2-6 months of age for infants born to hepatitis b surface antigen (hbsag)-negative (i.e., not hepatitis b virus [hbv]-infected) women. infants born to hbsag-positive (i.e., hbv-infected) women, ...200111263794
hepatitis b vaccine coverage among infants born to women without prenatal screening for hepatitis b virus infection: effects of the joint statement on thimerosal in vaccines.as a result of controversy about mercury exposures from vaccines containing thimerosal, the american academy of pediatrics and the us public health service recommended in july 1999 that the first dose of hepatitis b vaccine be deferred until 2 to 6 months of age, but only for infants born to hepatitis b surface antigen (hbsag)-negative women. we investigated the effect of these recommendation changes on the management of oregon infants born to women whose hbsag status was "unknown."200415071284
early identification and linkage to care of foreign-born people with chronic hepatitis b virus infection, multnomah county, oregon, 2012-2014.hepatitis b virus (hbv) infection is a global health concern, with a large proportion of high-risk individuals unaware of their infection status. people born in countries with medium to high endemicity of hbv should be tested and linked to care. we describe a program that improved identification and linkage to care for refugees and immigrants at the multnomah county health department in oregon.201727168669
case-control study of hepatitis b and hepatitis c in older adults: do healthcare exposures contribute to burden of new infections?reports of hepatitis b virus (hbv) and hepatitis c virus (hcv) transmission associated with unsafe medical practices have been increasing in the united states. however, the contribution of healthcare exposures to the burden of new infections is poorly understood outside of recognized outbreaks. we conducted a case-control study at three health departments that perform enhanced viral hepatitis surveillance in new york and oregon. reported cases of symptomatic acute hepatitis b and hepatitis c occ ...201322383058
hepatitis b vaccination of adolescents--california, louisiana, and oregon, 1992-1994.although hepatitis b vaccine has been available in the united states since 1982, acute and chronic hepatitis b virus (hbv) infection remains a public health problem. the comprehensive national strategy to prevent hbv transmission includes hepatitis b vaccination of adolescents, particularly in communities with high rates of injecting-drug use, teenage pregnancy, and/or sexually transmitted diseases (stds). however, vaccination of adolescents may be difficult because of their lack of routine heal ...19948065291
prevalence of hepatitis a, hepatitis b, and hiv among hepatitis c-seropositive state hospital patients: results from oregon state hospital.multiple studies have shown that individuals with severe mental illness are at increased risk for acquiring infection from human immunodeficiency virus (hiv), hepatitis b virus (hbv), and hepatitis c virus (hcv). moreover, patients with chronic hcv infection are at risk for fulminant hepatitis from acquired infection with hepatitis a virus (hav) or hbv, but there are limited data on the prevalence of hiv, hav, and hbv in chronically hospitalized u.s. psychiatric patients without mental retardati ...200312755656
seroprevalence of hepatitis b and c in juvenile detention entrants, oregon, 1994-1996.we tested sera originally collected from 1335 juvenile detention entrants for an hiv study in 1994-1996 for hepatitis b virus (hbv) and hepatitis c virus (hcv) antibodies; we found that the seroprevalence of hbv and hcv antibody was 2% and 1%, respectively. hbv was associated with asian race, whereas hcv infection was associated with injection drug use and female gender.200516227130
