origin of the hemagglutinin on a/equine/johannesburg/86 (h3n8): the first known equine influenza outbreak in south africa.a severe influenza outbreak occurred in horses in south africa in 1986. the causative agent was identified as an influenza virus [a/equine/johannesburg/86 (h3n8)]. antigenic analyses of the hemagglutinin (ha) with ferret antisera and monoclonal antibodies showed that the eq/johannesburg/86 virus is similar to recent equine h3 viruses. the nucleotide sequence analysis on the ha genes of eq/johannesburg/86 and other equine h3 influenza viruses, together with the epidemiological data, clearly demon ...19892548457
the prevalence of intestinal salmonella infection in horses submitted for necropsy.specimens from the ileum, colon and rectum were aseptically collected from 50 consecutive horse carcases submitted for necropsy to the department of pathology, faculty of veterinary science, university of pretoria. these were bacteriologically examined for the presence of salmonella. seventeen of these were positive for salmonella at one or more sites. serotyping of the isolates revealed a dominance of salmonella hayindogo in these horses.19958539039
culicoides (diptera:ceratopogonidae) associated with livestock in the onderstepoort area, gauteng, south africa as determined by light-trap collections.in 54 light-trap collections made at 28 sites in the onderstepoort area a total of 178,941 culicoides midges of 35 species was collected in march 1988; the survey was repeated at 26 sites in september and yielded 19,518 culicoides of 24 species. the number of culicoides species collected totalled 38. c,imicola was the most abundant species at 27 of the 28 sites sampled, and accounted for 88% and 67% of all midges collected in the two months respectively. this study not only confirms that c. imic ...19969173363

the first reported case of equine nocardioform placentitis in south africa.since the late 1980s a distinct form of focally-extensive mucoid to mucopurulent uterine body chronic placentitis, caused by nocardioform organisms, hasbeen recognised in horses in the usa state of kentucky and possibly in other areas. this disease has led to increasing numbers of foal losses from late abortions, still-births, prematurity, or early neonatal deaths. the foals are usually not infected, but may be small or emaciated. modes of infection and transmission are as yet unknown. nocardia s ...200112219921
lateral transmission of equine arteritis virus among lipizzaner stallions in south africa.a serological study conducted in 1995 revealed that 7 stallions at the lipizzaner centre, gauteng, south africa, were seropositive for antibody to equine arteritis virus (eav). a lipizzaner stallion imported into south africa from yugoslavia in 1981 had previously (1988) been confirmed to be an eav carrier. despite being placed under life-long breeding quarantine, eav had been transmitted between stallions at the lipizzaner centre.200314515961
molecular epidemiology of the african horse sickness virus s10 gene.between 2004 and 2006, 145 african horse sickness viruses (ahsv) were isolated from blood and organ samples submitted from south africa to the faculty of veterinary science, university of pretoria. all nine serotypes were represented, with a range of 3-60 isolates per serotype. the rna small segment 10 (s10) nucleotide sequences of these isolates were determined and the phylogeny investigated. ahsv, bluetongue virus (btv) and equine encephalosis virus (eev) all formed monophyletic groups and btv ...200818420793
