rabies surveillance in the united states during 1989.in 1989, 4,808 cases of rabies in animals other than human beings were reported to the centers for disease control, 1.8% more (4,724 to 4,808) than in 1988. eighty-eight percent (4,224/4,808) of those affected were wild animals and 12% (584/4,808) were domestic animals. cases were reported from 49 states, the district of columbia, and puerto rico; hawaii remained rabies-free. skunks (1,657) continued to be the most commonly reported rabid wild animal. for the second consecutive year, more cats ( ...19902276949
sarcocystis infection in the white-tailed deer (odocoileus virginianus) in montana: intensity and description of sarcocystis odoi n sp.sarcocystis infection was diagnosed in 27 of 36 (75%) samples of meat from white-tailed deer (odocoileus virginianus) in montana. two structurally distinct thin- and thick-walled sarcocysts were found in the white-tailed deer; the thin-walled sarcocysts were those of s odocoileocanis. a new name, s odoi, was proposed for the thick-walled sarcocysts. sarcocysts of s odoi were up to 1,050 microns long and 260 microns wide and contained a 6.5- to 12-microns thick wall. the ultrastructure of sarcocy ...19836414349
isolation of encysted toxoplasma gondii from muscles of mule deer in montana.toxoplasma gondii was isolated from muscles of 2 road-killed mule deer found near bozeman, mont, by feeding muscles to a toxoplasma-free cat. the cat shed t gondii oocysts 5 days after ingesting muscles pooled from the 2 deer. one infective oocyst of this isolate of t gondii was lethal to mice.19827161172
epizootic toxoplasmosis associated with abortion in dairy goats in montana.perinatal toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in goats from 2 farms in montana. of 7 pregnant does from one farm, 1 aborted a dead fetus and 2 each had a kid infected in utero. toxoplasma gondii was demonstrated histologically in the placenta of 2 of the infected does and by mouse inoculation in all 3 of them. the organism also was isolated from internal organs of 6 of 7 does, 4 of 4 cats, and 3 of 11 chickens from the farm. a pregnant doe from the other farm delivered 3 kids infected with t gondii. one ...19817204243
laboratory evaluation of fipronil and imidacloprid topical insecticides for control of the plague vector oropsylla montana (siphonaptera: ceratophyllidae) on california ground squirrels (rodentia: sciuridae).two insecticides, fipronil and imidacloprid, were evaluated for efficacy and longevity against oropsylla montana (baker), the most important vector of plague in california. wild-caught california ground squirrels, spermophilus beecheyi (richardson), were individually housed in the laboratory to serve as natural hosts to o. montana and for on-animal insecticide trials. several concentrations oftechnical grade fipronil and imidacloprid in acetone were applied to samples of clean rodent bedding to ...200211931250
use of surrogate markers of biological agents in air and settled dust samples to evaluate a water-damaged hospital.an environmental survey was conducted in two hospital buildings in montana, one of which had historical water incursion on the top floors and higher prevalence of reported respiratory symptoms that improved when the occupants were away from work. we measured culturable fungi and bacteria, fungal spores, endotoxin, and sub-micron particles in air; and culturable fungi and bacteria, endotoxin, markers of fungi (extra-cellular polysaccharides specific for penicillium/aspergillus, ergosterol, and be ...200515910534
detection of rickettsia rickettsii and bartonella henselae in rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks from california.sixty-two questing adult rhipicephalus sanguineus (latreille) ticks were collected by direct removal from blades of turfgrass and adjacent concrete walkways at a suburban home in riverside county, ca, and tested for the presence of rickettsia, bartonella, and ehrlichia dna. polymerase chain reaction (pcr) was used to amplify fragments of the 17-kda antigen gene and the rompa gene of the spotted fever group rickettsiae. one male tick contained r. rickettsii dna; its genotype differed from r. rick ...200717294935
survey of 11 western states for heartworm (dirofilaria immitis) infection, heartworm diagnostic and prevention protocols, and fecal examination protocols for gastrointestinal parasites.heartworm infection in dogs and cats in the western united states is a fairly new phenomenon, and for this reason it is often considered to be of minimal significance. the purpose of this survey was to collect data from 11 western states (arizona, california, colorado, idaho, montana, nevada, new mexico, oregon, utah, washington, and wyoming) in an effort to assess awareness of heartworm disease and identify areas in which improvement in understanding is needed. to accomplish this goal, veterina ...200718183548
