seroprevalence of neospora caninum in dairy cattle in bahia, brazil.sera collected from 447 dairy cattle on 14 dairy farms were tested for neospora caninum antibodies by use of an immunofluorescent antibody technique. positive reactions with titres > or =1:200 were found in 63 (14.09%) of animals. neospora positive sera were also tested for toxoplasma gondii antibodies by using a commercial latex agglutination test. antibodies to t. gondii were detected in 3 (4.76%) of 63 n. caninum positive sera. these results indicate that n. caninum infection is widespread am ...199910489205
investigation of neospora caninum, hammondia sp., and toxoplasma gondii in tissues from slaughtered beef cattle in bahia, brazil.neospora caninum, hammondia sp., and toxoplasma gondii are parasites with morphological and genetic similarities. n. caninum and t. gondii are important abortive agents of cattle and sheep, respectively, and may infect numerous animal species. hammondia sp. is not known to induce disease in animals, but may cause confusion in the identification of closely related coccidia. the aim of this study was to investigate infection rates caused by n. caninum, hammondia sp., and t. gondii in beef cattle u ...201019943064

bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis complex: diagnosis and evaluation of the risk factors from bahia, brazil.direct diagnoses were made by using - blood smears and nested pcr (npcr) tests on 309 blood samples from crossbred dairy cattle in the municipality of ibicaraí, bahia. from diagnostic blood smear slides, the observed parasitic frequencies were 31.1% for anaplasma marginale and 20.4% for babesia sp. from npcr diagnoses, they were 63% for a. marginale, 34% for babesia bigemina and 20.4% for babesia bovis. there were significant differences (p <0.01) between the two diagnostic methods (npcr and blo ...201625271452
frequency of species of the genus eimeria in naturally infected cattle in southern bahia, northeast brazil.the aim of this study was to determine the presence of species of the genus eimeria species in naturally infected bovines in southern bahia, northeast brazil. the study population comprised 117 zebu crossbred cattle that belonged to 10 dairy herds with extensive or semi-extensive production systems. the modified gordon and whitlock technique was used to determine positive samples and number of oocysts per gram of feces. statistical analyses were performed using the chi-square test with yates cor ...201121439239
[prevalence of antibodies anti-toxoplasma gondii in slaughtered cattle at stockyards in the state of bahia, brazil].serum samples of 600 slaughtered cattle from ilhéus and itabuna municipal slaughterhouse and jequié federal slaughterhouse, all of them located in the state of bahia were screened using an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test against toxoplasma gondii. prevalence was 11.83% (71), and positive samples were distributed as 19.3% (37) from ilhéus, 9.8% (21) from itabuna and 6.8% (13) from jequié slaughterhouses respectively. from positive cattle, 91.5% (65) had titles 1:64, and 8.5% (6) had titl ...200919602316
swainsonine-induced lysosomal storage disease in goats caused by the ingestion of turbina cordata in northeastern brazil.a disease of the central nervous system in goats was observed in the municipalities of juazeiro, casa nova and curaça, state of bahia, and petrolina, state of pernambuco, northeastern brazil. the disease was produced experimentally in two goats by the administration of dry turbina cordata mixed with grain. clinical signs were observed after the ingestion of 62 and 106 g/kg body weight in 28 and 54 days, respectively. the concentration of swainsonine in the plant varied from less than 0.001% to 0 ...200717030054
peridomestic structure, farming activity and triatomine infestation.the role of peridomestic structure and farming activity on triatomine infestation was studied on two vector species of chagas disease (triatoma pseudomaculata and t. brasiliensis) in bahia state, northeastern brazil. a randomly selected population issued from 136 farms was divided into four categories according to the householder activity. at regional scale, the dwellings of farmers working on degraded land of irrigated farms are less exposed to t. pseudomaculata infestation. at premises scale, ...200617007216
serological survey of babesia bovis, babesia bigemina, and anaplasma marginale antibodies in cattle from the semi-arid region of the state of bahia, brazil, by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.the objectives of this work were to determine the prevalence of babesia bovis, babesia bigemina, and anaplasma marginale detecting antibodies in cattle raised in the semi-arid region of the state of bahia, brazil, through indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (elisa) and to compare the performances of indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays with crude (i-elisa-cranaag) and recombinant major surface protein-5 (i-elisa-msp-5ag), as antigens to detect antibodies against a. marginale. an s ...200516302060
comparison between enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, indirect fluorescent antibody and rapid conglutination tests in detecting antibodies against babesia bovis.the performance of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa), an indirect fluorescent antibody test (ifat) and a rapid conglutination test (rct) for the detection of antibodies against babesia bovis, was evaluated with 462 cattle sera from bahia state; brazil. the results showed a concordance of 96.6% between the elisa and ifat, 90.5% between the elisa and rct, and 91.8% between the ifat and rct. although the prevalence rates determined by elisa (97.2%) and ifat (96.8%) were higher than that ...19989561698
in vitro cultivation and morphological characterization of phloemic trypanosomatids isolated from coconut trees.plant trypanosomatids cause lethal vascular wilting in palms of the arecaceae family. infections, affecting plants in south and central america, can result in significant economic loss. the study of trypanosomatids that cause these diseases has been complicated due to the inability to culture these organisms for in vitro analyses. to develop a protocol that would facilitate studies of trypanosomatids, continuous in vitro cultures of phloemic trypanosomatids were established from apical stems of ...201020002871
serological survey of antibodies to toxoplasma gondii in goats, sheep, cattle and water buffaloes in bahia state, brazil.serum samples from 439 goats, 240 sheep, 194 cattle and 104 water buffaloes were tested for antibodies to toxoplasma gondii by a latex agglutination test. antibodies to t. gondii were found in 28.93% of goats, 18.75% of sheep, 1.03% of cattle and 3.85% of water buffaloes, at a dilution of 1:64. the highest titres observed in goats, sheep, cattle and water buffaloes were 1:2048, 1:2048, 1:64 and 1:512, respectively.199910384902
leptospirin - an intradermic test for the diagnosis of leptospirosis.in the state of bahia (brazil) the leptospirin produced in germany for experimental use by the institute for veterinary medicine, federal health office, berlin, was administered to humans and animals in order to diagnose leptospirosis in collaboration with this institute. the results were compared with the microscopic agglutination reaction. the total number of test persons or animals was 268; this group included 81 human patients. 60 heads of cattle, 50 goats, 40 pigs, 25 horses, and 12 dogs. a ...19807434992
