serological survey to determine the prevalence of bovine leukaemia virus antibodies in dairy cattle on selected farms in the gauteng and mpumalanga provinces.cattle from a farm where enzootic bovine leukosis had been diagnosed were tested to determine the prevalence of bovine leukaemia virus antibodies. farmers who had bought cattle from this farm were identified and their herds also tested. of 381 adult dairy cattle tested, 14 animals reacted positively (3.67%). cattle (n = 81) from 3 selected herds, not associated with the affected farm were also bled and 7 animals reacted positively (8.64%).19969120859
culicoides (diptera:ceratopogonidae) associated with livestock in the onderstepoort area, gauteng, south africa as determined by light-trap collections.in 54 light-trap collections made at 28 sites in the onderstepoort area a total of 178,941 culicoides midges of 35 species was collected in march 1988; the survey was repeated at 26 sites in september and yielded 19,518 culicoides of 24 species. the number of culicoides species collected totalled 38. c,imicola was the most abundant species at 27 of the 28 sites sampled, and accounted for 88% and 67% of all midges collected in the two months respectively. this study not only confirms that c. imic ...19969173363
phage types of salmonella enterica serovar enteritidis isolated in south africa from 1991-1995.a total of 615 strains of salmonella enterica serovar enteritidis (se), received from 1991-1995 at the onderstepoort veterinary institute (ovi), were phage typed. most se isolates (54,7%) originated from poultry followed by humans (28,5 %) and poultry eggs (9,6 %). phage type 34 was the most prevalent (40,5 %) of all isolates, followed by phage type 4 (33,8 %). other phage types identified were 1, lb, 4a, 7, 7a, 9a, 14, 24, 24var and 35 (in total 2,4% of isolates). most isolates of se were recei ...200011028749
microbiological hazard identification and exposure assessment of street food vending in johannesburg, south africa.one hundred and thirty-two samples of beef, chicken, salad and gravy were collected from two street vendors over eleven replicate surveys to assess microbiological safety and quality. for each food type samples were collected during preparation and holding. dish water was also collected and food preparation surfaces swabbed during preparation and display. standard methods were used to determine aerobic plate counts, enterobacteriaceae counts, coliform counts and spore counts. six hundred and sev ...200011078164
prevalence of the dog nematode spirocerca lupi in populations of its intermediate dung beetle host in the tshwane (pretoria) metropole, south africa.spirocerca lupi (spirurida: spirocercidae) is a cosmopolitan parasite, principally of domestic dogs and dung beetles are its main intermediate hosts. in south africa there has recently been growing concern over the upsurge of reported cases of clinical spirocercosis in dogs, while little is known or understood about the dynamics of the host-parasite associations between dung beetles and this nematode. we determined and compared the prevalence of infection in dung beetles between rural, urban and ...200819294987
