variation between geographical populations of lutzomyia (nyssomyia) whitmani (antunes & coutinho, 1939) sensu lato (diptera:psychodidae:phlebotominae) in brazil.phylogenetic analysis of morphometric and biological characters indicated that there are two distinct forms of lutzomyia whitmani in brazil: one is present both north and south of the river amazonas in the state of pará while the other occurs in northeast brazil, in the state of ceará, and further south, including the type locality in state of bahia. the amazonian form is reportedly neither strongly anthropophilic nor synanthropic, and it is the vector of leishmania shawi; whereas the southern f ...19968734947
the sand fly fauna (diptera: psychodidae: phlebotominae) of a focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in ilhéus, state of bahia, brazil.the municipality of ilhéus, state of bahia, has a focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis where entomological studies were carried out to determine the sand fly species and their habits. lutzomyia migonei, l. sallesi, l. tupynambai, l. schreiberi, l. intermedia, l. whitmani, l. yuilli yuilli, l. fischeri, l. pessoai, l. shannoni and l. misionensis were identified. lutzomyia whitmani was the predominant species. specimens were collected indoors, at peridomestic sites, in the cocoa plantations and in oth ...19968734952
[preliminary results of a project about the ecology of phlebotomus vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the state of bahia].preliminary data of a project about the ecology of the phlebotominae (sandflies) in a tegumentary leishmaniasis area of coconut plantation in the south of the state of bahia, brazil are presented. there are 60 dwellings far of one another, where existed 31 dogs and 229 inhabitants. among them 41.5% were montenegro positive; 37.5% from these had scars of healed ulcers and 8.8% had active ulcers. 53% of the house had dogs from which 22% were seropositive; from the 7 dogs with ulcers only 3 were se ...19968713612
[experimental infection of lutzomyia whitmani in dogs infected with leishmania braziliensis braziliensis].lutzomyia (n.) whitmani was infected on leishmaniotic lesions of three out of nine dogs infected with leishmania braziliensis braziliensis. the infectivity rates in these sandflies were 8.3% (1/12), 7.1% (1/14) and 1.8% (3/160), respectively. in addition, 180 lu. whitmani fed on non-ulcerated regions of one of the infected dogs and none became infected. we emphasize the vector potentiality of lu. whitmani for l.b. braziliensis in the endemic region of três braços, bahia, brazil.19863796276
[epidemiological characteristics of american cutaneous leishmaniasis in an endemic region of the state of bahia. iii. phlebotomine fauna].the phlebotomine fauna is highly varied in três braços, an endemic area of american cutaneous leishmaniasis, situated in the cacao growing region in the southeast of bahia state, brazil. thirty spécies of the lutzomyia genus were identified in 13,535 specimens collected between 1976 and 1984. lutzomyia whitmani was the dominant species accounting for 99% of flies in the peridomicile and 97.5% of those caught in homes. in the forest the predominant species were lu. ayrozai and lu. yuilli. lu. whi ...19863574127
a mitochondrial dna phylogeny indicates close relationships between populations of lutzomyia whitmani (diptera: psychodidae, phlebotominae) from the rain-forest regions of amazônia and northeast brazil.phylogenetic analysis of all 31 described mitochondrial (cytochrome b) haplotypes of lutzomyia whitmani demonstrated that new material from the state of rondônia, in southwest amazônia, forms a clade within a lineage found only in the rain-forest regions of brazil. this rain-forest lineage also contains two other clades of haplotypes, one from eastern amazônia and one from the atlantic forest zone of northeast brazil (including the type locality of the species in ilhéus, state of bahia). these f ...199910419383
morphometric and phenetic studies of five geographical populations of lutzomyia whitmani (diptera: psychodidae) in brazil.a morphometric survey examined adult specimens of lutzomyia whitmani (antunes & coutinho) captured at 5 municipalities in southeastern and northeastern brazil to compare the populations. the localities were ilhéus (bahia), martinho campos (minas gerais), corte de pedra (bahia), baturité (ceará), and amaraji (pernambuco): all are known foci of american cutaneous leishmaniasis. fifteen males and 15 females from each population were analyzed morphometrically for 42 and 37 characters, respectively. ...199910593089
