infections associated with ovine perinatal mortality in victoria.the occurrence of infections associated with perinatal mortality was investigated. in 1970, carcasses from 94 flocks distributed throughout victoria were examined by microbiological and histopathological techniques. carcasses from 4 of the same flocks were similarly examined in 1971. widespread occurrence of listeria monocytogenes and campylobacter fetus was demonstrated with l. monocytogenes being recognised in 25% of the flocks examined. no other bacterial pathogens commonly associated with ov ...1975809028
agglutinating antibodies to toxoplasma gondii in sera from captive eastern barred bandicoots in australia.toxoplasmosis is considered a severe health risk for many marsupial species. the mainland australian population of bandicoot is endangered. therefore, a preliminary serosurvey was conducted to evaluate exposure to toxoplasma gondii in 57 captive eastern barred bandicoot and to estimate the possible impact of toxoplasma on recovering populations. five (9%) bandicoot were classified as seropositive using a modified agglutination test. nineteen additional bandicoot (33%) were classified as serosusp ...200010813601
phagocytic efficiency of monocytes and macrophages obtained from sydney blood bank cohort members infected with an attenuated strain of hiv-1.defective function of monocyte-derived macrophages contributes to hiv-1 pathogenesis. we found that phagocytosis of the opportunistic pathogens mycobacterium avium complex and toxoplasma gondii was impaired in monocytes obtained from individuals infected with wild-type strains of hiv-1 but generally not in monocytes collected over a 6-year period from sydney blood bank cohort (sbbc) members infected with nef/long terminal repeats (ltr) region-defective strains of hiv-1. however, longitudinal ana ...200314657753
tumours of the brain and presence of antibodies to toxoplasma gondii.the possible association between prior infection with the protozoan toxoplasma gondii and development of brain tumours was investigated as part of two australian population-based case-control studies of adult brain tumours. one study, based in adelaide, south australia, collected blood from 73 subjects with glioma, 53 subjects with meningioma and 348 controls. the other study, based in melbourne, victoria, collected blood from 44 subjects with glioma and 67 controls. all tumours had been verifie ...19938359956
central nervous system toxoplasmosis in roller canaries.several birds in a flock of 40 roller canaries (serinus canaria) from an outdoor aviary in victoria, australia, developed central nervous system signs that included blindness, nystagmus, ataxia, and head rotation. four died, and four were euthanatized. two euthanatized birds were submitted for microscopic examination of tissues. brain lesions in both birds consisted of scattered foci of nonsuppurative meningoencephalitis with gliosis, mild to moderately extensive lymphocytic/plasmacytic perivasc ...19957794185
toxoplasmosis and the wild rabbit oryctolagus cuniculus in victoria, australia with suggested mechanisms for dissemination of oocysts.sera or serum eluates from 1697 wild rabbits [oryctolagus cuniculus (l)], collected over the past 10 years from 24 sites in 5 geographic regions of victoria, were examined for antibodies to toxoplasma gondii. sera generally were classified into three broad groups, negative (titre less than 10), weakly reactive (titre 10 to 100) and strongly positive (titre greater than 1000). strongly positive sera came from rabbits collected in a small number of localized areas, most significantly the melbourne ...19817026675
seroprevalence of varicella zoster virus, parvovirus b19 and toxoplasma gondii in a melbourne obstetric population: implications for management.at an antenatal clinic at a melbourne obstetric hospital, 308 women were questioned about a known past history of infection with varicella zoster virus (vzv), human parvovirus b19 and toxoplasma gondii. immunoglobulin g (igg) concentrations were determined for the 3 infectious agents and a recalled history of infection was compared with the presence of specific antibody. exactly 66% of women recalled being infected with chickenpox (vzv) and 94% showed serological evidence of past exposure. altho ...200111284642
toxoplasma gondii antibody in domestic cats in melbourne.to determine the prevalence of toxoplasma gondii in a population of domestic cats in melbourne.199910451730
serodiagnosis of toxoplasmosis in a common wombat.an 8-yr-old captive, female common wombat (vombatus ursinus) from victoria, australia was euthanased after an illness of 36 days manifested by lethargy, inappetance and terminal coma with respiratory failure. toxoplasmosis was diagnosed during life by the toxoplasma direct agglutination test (dat) which showed a positive initial titre of 1:1,024 at 22 days after onset of illness and a four fold rise in titre to 1:4,098 2 wk later, just prior to death. the toxoplasma modified agglutination test ( ...19979131574
the aetiology of ocular toxoplasmosis in melbourne.the biological mothers of 23 patients presenting with acute chorioretinal toxoplasmosis had sera screened for the presence of antibodies to toxoplasma gondii. twenty-two of the mothers (96%) had positive serology and one (4%) had negative serology. this is consistent with the hypothesis that most cases of ocular toxoplasmosis are congenital in origin, but indicates that some cases are due to acquired toxoplasmosis.19938494636
lethal toxoplasmosis in an aviary of kakarikis (cyanoramphus spp.) in australia.a small outbreak of fatal toxoplasmosis is described in 6 kakariki (cyanoramphus spp.) in an aviary in australia. toxoplasma gondii-like tachyzoites were found associated with necrosis in intestine, spleen, liver, and lungs. protozoal tachyzoites reacted positively with t. gondii-specific polyclonal antibodies. this is the first report of toxoplasmosis in kakariki.200818576878
