spectinomycin-resistant neisseria gonorrhoeae.neisseria gonorrhoeae resistant to high levels of spectinomycin (more than 2,048 microng/ml), were isolated from specimens obtained from a patient with urethritis. the bacterial resistance to spectinomycin is probably due to ribosomal changes that are a result of a chromosomal mutation. if spectinomycin fails to cure gonorrhea, spectinomycin resistance should be considered.1977140251

ophthalmia neonatorum: a chart review.cases of ophthalmia neonatorum diagnosed at grady memorial hospital 1967-1973 were reviewed. of 302 cases 43 could be diagnosed as gonococcal, 86 chlamydial, 3 gonococcal and chlamydial, 31 staphylococcal, and 5 chemical. silver nitrate prophylaxis was routinely employed. gonococcal cases peaked during the third quarter of the year and chlamydial during the fourth quarter. gonococcal cases were associated with a longer duration of ruptured fetal membranes. definitive etiologic diagnosis could no ...1976819900
urinary leukocyte esterase test: a screening method for the detection of asymptomatic chlamydial and gonococcal infections in men.the ability of a urinary dipstick leukocyte esterase test (let) to predict culture-verified asymptomatic urethral infections of chlamydia trachomatis and neisseria gonorrhoeae was determined in 1095 men (aged 18-39) who presented to an urban hospital for acute general medical care. prevalence of chlamydial and gonococcal infections were 4% and 2.5% respectively; let sensitivity was 41% and specificity was 91%. in the youngest one-third, the prevalence of infection and let sensitivity and specifi ...19921538163
plasmid-mediated tetracycline-resistant neisseria gonorrhoeae--georgia, massachusetts, oregon. 19863084943
outbreak of penicillinase-producing neisseria gonorrhoeae with an african connection.previous outbreaks of penicillinase-producing gonococcal infection in the united states have generally been attributed to importation of southeast asian strains. during july 1982 through july 1983, 110 cases of gonorrhea caused by penicillinase-producing strains were reported in metropolitan atlanta, georgia. among the 53 infected women, 14 (26%) had pelvic inflammatory disease (pid). compared to other infected women, those with pid experienced a greater delay from the time of last sexual exposu ...19863085233

nongonococcal urethritis. a venereal disease as prevalent as epidemic gonorrhea. 19744212201
an unclassified gram-negative rod isolated from the pharynx on thayer-martin medium (selective agar).an oxidase-positive, small gram-negative rod was isolated on thayer-martin medium (tm) inoculated with pharyngeal swabs obtained during surveys to detect neisseria carriers. in one survey, this organism was isolated from 48% of the subjects, and 50 or more colonies were present on the majority of the primary isolation plates. other characteristics of the organism, which has been given the provisional designation "tm-1," include: delayed production (2 to 10 days) of acid from glucose, formation o ...19724565636

relative incidence of corynebacterium vaginale (haemophilus vaginalis), neisseria gonorrhoeae, and trichomonas spp. among women attending a venereal disease clinic. 19704988098
the risk of sexually transmitted diseases in human immunodeficiency virus-infected parturients.we assessed the prevalence of and defined the relationship between other sexually transmitted diseases and human immunodeficiency virus infection.19938238115
health risk factors among detained adolescent females.to identify the prevalence of health risk factors among a sample of detained adolescent females and determine whether there are racial/ethnic differences.200415556741
the effect of correct and consistent condom use on chlamydial and gonococcal infection among urban adolescents.to evaluate the relationship between self-reported correct and consistent condom use and chlamydial and gonococcal infection.200515939852
accounting for failures may improve precision: evidence supporting improved validity of self-reported condom use.to determine whether a measure of unprotected vaginal sex that is adjusted for condom failures would produce improved accuracy in predicting biologically confirmed stds (chlamydia and gonorrhea) among female teens.200516041255
association of chlamydia trachomatis with persistence of high-risk types of human papillomavirus in a cohort of female adolescents.human papillomavirus (hpv) infection is a necessary but not sufficient cause of cervical cancer. while chlamydia infection has been associated with cervical cancer, the meaning of this association remains unclear. the authors' objective was to investigate this association by evaluating whether concurrent genital tract infections are associated with hpv persistence, a precursor to cervical cancer. interview data and biologic samples for hpv, chlamydia trachomatis, neisseria gonorrhoeae, trichomon ...200516120706
chlamydia prevalence among college students: reproductive and public health implications.routine chlamydia screening is not readily available at all college campuses.200818354340
antimicrobial resistant gonorrhea in atlanta: 1988-2006.gonococcal isolates (n = 4336) were collected from men with urethritis at the fulton county std clinic between 1988 and 2006. antimicrobial susceptibility was performed by agar dilution. increasing numbers of isolates from men who have sex with men and with fluoroquinolone resistance were noted. new antimicrobials effective against gonorrhea are urgently needed.201121844728

serogrouping of neisseria gonorrhoeae: correlation of serogroup with disseminated gonococcal infection.gonococci can be divided into serogroups wi, wii, and wiii by coagglutination. to assess the clinical correlation of serogroups of gonococci, we studied isolates of gonococci from patients with disseminated and uncomplicated gonococcal infections in three cities in the united states. strains of neisseria gonorrhoeae belonging to serogroup wi represented 85 (84%) of 101 isolates from patients with disseminated gonococcal infection (dgi) and 68 (40%) of 168 isolates from patients with uncomplicate ...19846431621
the denver sexually transmitted diseases prevention/training center: a two-year performance evaluation.the venereal disease control division of the centers for disease control (atlanta, ga.) has funded the development of nine regional sexually transmitted diseases prevention/training centers. during its first two years of operation, the denver center offered 17 courses of three types to 158 students. the performance of the denver center as to appropriateness of student selection and outcome measures of training was evaluated. the evaluation concentrated on students from the more extensive, two-we ...19826100907
epidemiological characterization of neisseria gonorrhoeae by lectins.a total of 101 isolates of penicillinase-producing and non-penicillinase-producing neisseria gonorrhoeae with known nutritional requirements, plasmid content, and serovars, were examined for lectin agglutination patterns. these isolates were from outbreaks in georgia, california, hawaii, and pennsylvania. cell suspensions made from 16- to 18-h cultures were mixed with 14 different lectins, and the resultant agglutination patterns were classified as agglutination groups. among the 101 isolates te ...19853930560
penicillinase-producing neisseria gonorrhoeae: results of surveillance in the united states.in september 1976 the center for disease control (atlanta, georgia) initiated surveillance for cases of infection due to penicillinase-productin neisseria gonorrhoeae in the united states. one hundred ninety-one cases of penicillinase-producing gonococcal infection were confirmed through june 30, 1977. of 177 cases for which histories of sexual exposure were available, 69 were traced to sexual contact in the far east, and one was traced to sexual contact in west africa. of 181 cases for which cl ...1978146725
