isolated anti-hbc-igm antibody among blood donors in the semi-arid region of nigeria.laboratory screening for the diagnosis of hepatitis b virus (hbv) infection in blood donors currently consists of testing for hepatitis b surface (hbsag) antigen alone. the prevalence of isolated anti-hbc-igm is not yet known in the semi arid region of nigeria. the major objective of this study was to determine the sero-prevalence of antibody to hepatitis b core antigen (anti-hbc-igm) and other infectious agent markers; hbsag, hcv, hiv and syphilis among blood donors in the north eastern region ...201122129677
study of hepatic functions and prevalence of hepatitis b surface antigenaemia in nigerian children with human immunodeficiency virus infection.hiv and hepatitis b virus (hbv) co-infected patients have a significantly increased risk of dying from liver disease especially after starting treatment with highly active antiretroviral therapy. we aim to determine the prevalence of hepatitis b surface antigenaemia in hiv-infected children and their significance in relation to hepatic functions.200920120641
prevalence of hepatitis b surface antigen among patients suspected of liver diseases in a nigerian hospital.hepatitis b virus (hbv) infection has been reported to be the aetiological factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (hcc), hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. this study was therefore carried out to determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis b surface antigen (hbsag), a specific marker of hbv infection in patients with suspected liver diseases. the investigation was carried out among patients attending the university of maiduguri teaching hospital (umth), nigeria with clinical symptoms suggestive of liver ...200011257921
prevalence of transmissible blood infections among blood donors at the university of maiducuri teaching hospital, maiduguri, nigeria.before the advent of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (aids), many countries of the world transfused blood without seriously considering the potential risks of transmission of infectious agents. even after it was shown that the human immunodeficiency virus(hiv) could be transmitted through blood and blood products, many hospitals and clinics in nigeria still continue to transfuse unscreened blood. this study was therefore initiated to highlight the risks of transmitting infectious agents ...19979299819
hepatitis b virus infection among blood donors and pregnant women in maiduguri, nigeria.hepatitis due to hepatitis b virus (hbv), and sequelae such as hepatocellular carcinoma (hcc) are very common in the maiduguri area of nigeria. in a serological survey of 287 blood donors (all males) and 224 pregnant women, we found that 22.0% of the blood donors and 11.6% of the pregnant women were positive of hbsag. for hbeag the prevalence rates were 6.64% and 1.39% respectively. these findings make it imperative that all blood donations and pregnant women be screened for hbsag. all positive ...19947875094
