[trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei infection contracted from a hedgehog].occasionally the hedgehog (erinaceus europaeus) is infected by trichophyton mentagrophytes (robin) blanchard var. erinacei. this zoophilic dermatophyte may cause a difficult human phlegmatic trichophytia infection. the thread-fungus grows on the usual culture-medium with a clear-white surface without radius-folding. the lower surface of the culture shows a typical brillant-yellow colour. microscopically the fungus presents abundant microconidia formation and a few distinct macroconidia. cross-br ...1979155666
arthroderma benhamiae infection in the central african hedgehog erinaceus albiventris, and a report of a human case.the occurrence of ringworm caused by arthroderma benhamiae ajello & cheng is reported in central african hedgehogs (erinaceus albiventris wagner), caught near nairobi, kenya. of the 45 animals examined, 10 were positive on culture, including a litter of 4 young. six infected animals were without lesions, and 2 littermates showed scaly areas similar to those described in e. europaeus l. caused by trichophyton erinacei (smith & marples) padhye & carmichael. no correlation with mite infestation or ...19751171366
molecular epidemiology of arthroderma benhamiae, an emerging pathogen of dermatophytoses in japan, by polymorphisms of the non-transcribed spacer region of the ribosomal dna.in japan, several isolates of arthroderma benhamiae, a teleomorphic member of trichophyton mentagrophytes complex, which were not found by earlier mating studies, have recently been recovered from human and animal dermatophytoses. in the present study, intraspecies polymorphism of a. benhamiae isolated in japan was investigated using restriction fragment length polymorphisms (rflp) of the non-transcribed spacer (nts) region of the ribosomal dna (rdna), a method introduced to detect intraspecies ...200111457639
[from hedgehogs to men. zoophilic dermatophytosis caused by trichophyton erinacei in eight patients].the hedgehog is an in germany previously unrecognized source of human ringworm. eight hedgehog caretakers from göttingen and the surrounding area developed dermatophytosis caused by trichophyton erinacei. four patients who handled the animals without gloves developed lesions on the hands that were more in keeping with hand eczema, leading to a delay in diagnosis. the other caretakers who wore gloves presented with typical ringworm on the arms, the big toe, the back, the abdomen, and the thighs. ...200716523278
trichophyton bullosum: a new zoonotic dermatophyte species.we report the first human case of dermatophytosis caused by trichophyton bullosum in a 21-year-old male who had a skin lesion located on his forearm. the dermatophyte was isolated in culture and further identified by sequence analysis of internal transcripted spacer regions. the species t. bullosum is a zoophilic dermatophyte rarely isolated from the coat of horses in africa and asia. in the present case, it was probably transmitted by contact with an infected donkey in a rural area in france. a ...201121905949
